back to prozac?

Posted by trea on September 4, 2003, at 11:19:35

I very successfully used prozac for about 1.5 years many years ago. Then prozac just stopped doing anything for me at any dose. I have since tried numerous alternatives with varying degrees of success. Most recently & most effective is Wellbutrin SR 150mg bid. I must say that my syptoms of depression are well controlled & anxiety is much lower. However, I have gained more weight since on Wellbutrin XR than I did with a pregnancy. I seem to eat more, more often & even though I have tried weight watchers, etc it seems that the drive to eat is always there. Specifically I crave carbs & more carbs. Any suggestions? Could I return to prozac & see if it would work again since years have passed? Or, once you've had it to loose it's impact is it gone for good? Thank you!

My guess is that Prozac would work again for you since so much time has passed. From what I have read, most people lose rather than gain weight on Wellbutrin. But everyone is different.

As you know, the most touted diet these days is low carb and high protein. Have you tried that?

I have heard that that diet is not very healthy in the long run. I am considering it because my current diet is probably less healthy in the long run. So, the prozac may "kick in" again since time has passed maybe? That would be great. I'll call my md tomorrow. Thank you.

I was on Prozac for years and it seemed to do less and less. You might investigate Lamictal. It has been wonderful for me. We all react differently to these meds I know, but Lamictal has been the best thing I've ever taken. It takes some time to get to a therapeutic dose. But it has been worth it. Good luck.
