3 VICADIN cures my SP!!! So what meds do i need???

Posted by Psycho D on August 30, 2003, at 20:26:10

I was recollecting all of the past drugs i've abused (back when i used to abuse them) and which ones helped me out with my Social Anxiety. I remember that one time i took 3 vicadin(perscribed to a friend of mine) just for fun and i felt sooo relaxed and calm and good!! I know that abusing painkillers is not an effective treatment!LOL ARe there any meds that are similar to vicadin that are used in the treatment of SP??? I guess some of the benzos would be the closest thing... but i'm not sure. Could someone with knowledge in this area please help me???

Benzos like Klonopin and Xanax can alleviate anxiety very well, although the effects are more subtle for most people than the hydrocodone (synthetic opiate) in Vicodin. I'd recommend them highly, as long as you are using them for anxiety relief and not recreationally. Klonopin (clonazepam) is probably the best for long-term relief, and doctors are much more comfortable prescribing this than Xanax (which is often thought of as "addictive").

I've used hydrocodone for tooth problems etc. and it is relaxing (and mood-lifting). However, I wouldn't want to make a habit of taking it, and unless you suffer from chronic pain, you're unlikely to get many more than a few pills anyway. Clonazepam can be wonderful for anxiety, and if I were you I'd ask my doctor about it. Some will prescribe it, some won't, but it is very safe to take for long periods of time (although if you discontinue it, you should go off it gradually).

Ah yes.........Good ole Vitamin 'V' the feel good narcotic. I can't think of any psych med that gives the same effect that Vicodin does, but I do hear you LOL
Yep-you are probably right-anti-anxiety agents, such as Ativan, Xanax, and Klonopin are the agents of choice for starting SP management. However, I don't think BuSpar is effective for SP. I heard that there is new research available on Klonopin in helping SP also.
Good luck:-)

I take Ultram, a combination narcotic painkiller with effects similar to hydrocodone (Vicodin) and a mild serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. It's being prescribed more commonly these days for psychiatric purposes, especially since it was discovered that it can have a profound impact on obsessive-compulsive disorder. I personally take it for depression and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. It doesn't help my SP, but I take Xanax XR and Klonopin for that. But then again, Vicodin didn't help my SP either -- so if Vicodin works for you, I'd say there's a very high likelihood that Ultram will. Another option is either Subutex (buprenorphine) or Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone). They're also both narcotic painkillers and are being used occasionally to treat depression, so why not SP?

Regardless, you have to have a pretty understanding doctor to have an opioid prescribed for psychiatric purposes. The most consistently helpful medications are the benzodiazepines, and that is probably a better place to start than going straight for the heavy-duty drugs.
