I am a 17 year old girl taking Effexor for Trichotillomania. One of the side effects of effexor is Anorexia. I am very concerned about this, since i have been known to diet and excersise irrationally. If anyone has any information on this, please let me know.. Thank You

Some of this meds. have some pretty crappy side effects but anorexia wouldn't be one of them. Many of these ADs are more likely to put weight on you than take it off, depending upon your metabolism... You may have mis-read coments that it can cause anhedonia (loss of pleasure) or anorgasmia (difficulty having orgasms)
I think Janice & some others have struggled with
trichotillomania & can comment on their experiences...

dj, I stopped effexor prematurely for this very reason. But I should have stuck it out starting with half doses. This side effect is supposed to go away in 3 weeks according to my pdoc. I think I goofed and stopped too soon. Try to ride it out if you can. AFter the body adjusts a lot of people actually have weight gain instead.

Hi Juliette,
I have/had both Trichotillomania and anorexia, and have been on Effexor.
Everyone's experience with medications is different. Effexor didn't decrease my hunger cues because at the time I was on it, I didn't have any hunger cues. I didn't lose weight on it either. Jamie said it only affected his appetite for 3 weeks.
It sounds like you are still very vunerable to the psychological aspects of anorexia. Inform your doctor of this. All the different disorders interact with one another, and sometimes it's hard to figure out where one starts and the other ends. Janice.

I have had three pdocs. Two of them said the exact same thing as jamie. That the anorexia side effect goes away in a couple or three weeks.

James here....I assume by Anorexia you don't mean the condition
but no desire to eat, they do mean the same thing. I do experience this with Effexor, so I take it at night b4 I go to sleep.j

i am on effexor xr and have been for several months--150. at first, i didn't have any side effects but now--for the last two or three weeks--i cannot eat. i thought maybe it had to do with the constipation at first, but i just can't make myself put food in my mouth, it just seems repellent. i have a history of body image difficulties as well as anorexia and i know it is an easy chute to fall down, when i lose weight, i like it. any suggestions? anybody know of this coming and going this far into taking effexor?

I had the same issue, lost over 20 lbs., was obsessed with my weight and self image. I loved losing weight, loved it, it made me feel so powerful, but eventually the meds really started to work and the feeling decreased over time, I put most of the weight back on over the next couple of months and oddly enough, it hasn't bothered me that much, I've been pretty happy (until recently, but that's another story)

I've seen anorexia listed as a possible side effect for Effexor so take your concerns seriously. It's affecting me that way too but I've got pounds to spare.
Be careful!

Lavender!
Hurray that you've reach self-acceptance of your body and body-image (not necessarily the same thing). We are always so hard on ourselves for not looking like pencil-thin models. I don't look at other people that way, expecting perfection. Why am I paranoid that people are expecting perfection from me? You're making great progress!!!!

thanks for your replies...i went through the body image crap as well...i eventually did this outreach class on media awareness and self perception where i did presentations to schools in the community. For some reason that was this major break through for me and I was actually happy with my body. That's why this concerns me--the losing weight, and the liking it--i know it isn't healthy and i don't want to fall into that again. it's weird. I really don't like effexor for some reason. it works but it creeps me out how dependent my body is on it and what it does to me. ho hum. i don't know....
