My doc suggested Parnate for my AHDH. But I refused it because the other times I was on ADHD I couldn't stop myself to drink when I was with other people. Anyone else experienced increased alcohol consumption with ADs ? How did you solve the problem (if you did)? And last but not least, how do MAOIs restrictions affect your life ? Thanks

I have spent years on the maoi diet and I have never found it difficult or confining. It is a trade-off, though, and I'm sure that if the MAOI didn't make me feel better I would resent the diet. But the MAOIs can be great, and the diet no big deal. Basically, the diet means no cheese and nothing smoked or cured. Of course you can eat American cheese so McDonald's is never a problem (except no bacon).
Sorry, no thoughts on the drinking issue.
Good luck.

The diet list is very out-dated and over-hyped. I eat absolutely anything I want and have constant almost perfect blood-pressure. Not to say go all-out like I do. I do, just because I can. It may be all genetics. I sugguest take it slow at first and monitor your vitals every so often for changes. You'll probably find that a MAOI after a while hinders your life in no way. You'll have side-effects starting out but I can guarantee they will most, if not all diminish. Good luck!

You do not have to completely limit alcohol on MAOIs. I believe things like vodka and gin are ok, and wine is ok in moderation. Look around on the internet, there is a lot of info.

I've been on Parnate for many years and find that it has absolutely no effect on sexual function. As for weight, I get the feeling that my experience is opposite from the majority: Parnate causes me to have a craving for sweets and carbohydrates and consequent weight GAIN (which I very much appreciate after having lost weight during depression). Since re-starting Parnate in early March, I regained all the weight I lost plus a few more pounds.

I have never had a problom with drinking before nardil, and still don't. But on occasion I will drink 1 to 5 beers, sometimes after the buzz I get sick and fall asleep other times only an depression feeling for a few hours to 2 days. I also take xanex, but have had no ill side effects. I have been on nardil since 1996. it took from 1989 to 96' to find this med, it does best thus far so I am sticking to it.
