By the way....I am surprised to see so many negative comments about the terrible side-effects of antidepressants. This scares me. Is there such a thing as a good anti-depressant?

They're all good, for some people. But not for others.
Groups such as this one are artificially enriched with people who have adverse reactions, or who fail to respond to meds with anything other than side-effects. We self-select ourselves, to become members here. Those who take the meds, find relief, and get on with life, would be unlikely to have a motive to post here.
I don't have any message of reassurance for you. The only way you'll know what a med does, is to try it. One thing you can do is to research a particular drug if one is offered to you. You can go to www.rxlist.com, and access the same information that is available to your doctor or pharmacist (that information is linked to the generic name, not the brand name). If you have trouble understanding any of it, there are people here who can "translate" it for you.

Hi Larry,
Ive been posting similar concerns but my posts have been perhaps more antagonizing.
It is not ecouraging to read from you that the best info to get is from the drug sites. The list of side effects posted there are not reassuring either .Your advise was good that those who have been sucessful arent likely to post here.
Which are you?

Maybe, maybe not. I have found relief and am back to my old self. ADs were a savior for me. I post here because I enjoy helping others who have the same questions and concerns that I did. I also find the topic of psychopharmacology interesting and I have spent much time researching it.

The list of side effects posted there are not reassuring either .I don't recall saying that was the "best" info. It tends to be comprehensive with respect to side-effects emerging early in treatment, as the trials are themselves short in duration. You'll get better information there than you will from any doctor.

> ImaI have had horrible experiences with drugs, including a psychotic break. I get side-effects not listed in those lists. I've had doctors not believe me when I tell them drug X caused a particular side-effect. Still, I believe drugs saved my life. And, I refuse to generalize from my experience. Most people do not have the difficulties I had using those same drugs.
