I am one of those folks who tried everything else, then finally took Nardil (my first MAOI), and felt normal and happy for the first time. That was six years ago, and it only lasted nine months. I had a briefer success with Parnate. Over the last four years, I have twice gone back to both of them with no effect. Now I have been 15 months MAOI-free.
Here's my question: I think I ought to try Nardil again, after this long time off. What dose should I pursue, how fast, and what adjuncts to add and how much? Also, anyone know a doc in North America with a special knowledge of pushing the boundaries of MAOIs? Thanks for help.

Unfortunately, poop-out with Nardil is not uncommon. I had a similar success with it that lasted about 6 weeks. How would you characterize your response to Effexor? Did you get up to 300mg?

scott: i cannot recall my effexor dosage. did you have a good response to nardil, and then respond well to 300mg effexor? That sounds promising.

The three types of drugs that I respond to are:
1. Tricyclics
2. MAO inhibitors
3. EffexorUnfortunately, my responses are only minimal or transitory. While Effexor was in clinical trials, some investigators were nicknaming it the non-MAOI MAOI. I think it is important to test Effexor at dosages of 300mg or more if it is tolerated.

Scott, you only got 6 weeks relief out of it? What a disappointment. I got almost that from moclobemide so my shrink has suggested I try Nardil for the first time.I am terrified of the tyramine reaction (see my other post here called "How many people in US take MAOIs").
Let's hope I get more than 6 weeks.
Did you then try Parnate? I am in the UK and we also have Marplan. Have you got any views on how well those work before they poop out?

Don: I've taken maois for years. Tyramine reaction is no reason for concern. As you will read elsewhere on this site, under maoi diet, the fears are largely inflated. As long as you are sensible (don't ignore the diet rules) there will be no problem at all.

jmackie, it is easy for you to say don't ignore the diet rukles but they seem so overinclusive that I am sure I must experiment with htem to see which are true and which are not. That way I am probably going to get some of those side effects. :-(
