Memory, neurontine and effexir

Posted by Bunkie on July 15, 2003, at 15:30:12

I am having trouble with memory issues after taking neurontine for over two years and effexir for one year. I have discontinued the effexir for the past two months but still take neurontin. All of this is for bipolar II. Progressively over the past year or so, I find it harder and harder to remember small things. At first it was not a problem because one cannot obsess if one cannot remember. But as time moves on, I have difficulty recalling words to finish sentences and ideas. I have trouble spelling words I use to know how to spell. I cannot recall from one meeting to the next at work what we said in the earlier meeting. I am 48 and have been told that memory deminishes with age but this seems extreme to me. I find that the memory problems interfere with my work. I am forever forgetting important things and my staff just looks at me seeming to say, what has happened to her memory. She can't recall a thing. Any others experiencing this with either of these drugs? What do you do for it? Thanks.

I also had serious memory issues when I took Effexor, and had the same problem remembering words and being unable to finish sentences (at age 26!). I found that the effect went away after I stopped taking Effexor. I have also taken Neurontin and didn't notice the same type of memory loss, though it was a lower dose than the Effexor.

It's frustrating and scary to be struggling for words and memories--perhaps changing drugs would be a good thing to try?

This is the link for a very recent posting from Larry Hoover on memory. Hope it helps.
