has anyone been treated for migraines with depakote?
mr dr. suggested it today, but i'm scared of the side effects.

Hi -
I tried Depakote for my migraines, but it didn't seem to do much. That's not saying much, since I haven't found anything yet that helps prevent them :(
I've been thinking of giving it another try though. I've been having really bad migraines for a few months and I need to get a handle on this. I was thinking about trying a low dose at bedtime and seeing how that is as far as side effects. If you'd be interested, I could let you know how it goes.

Thank you Scott. Yes, I have tried that and a couple of other tricyclics in the past (over 10 years ago). But I have a low blood pressure problem, so my name back then would have been Woozy :) The blood pressure problem was diagnosed only a few years ago, but I've always had it. It also explains why I felt so awful on beta blockers and verapamil. If only I had ailments whose treatments weren't working at cross purposes!

I'm on low dose Depakote, 125 mg. Perhaps it's not enough, but it doesn't do anything for them. Maybe a higher dose, but higher doses make me a bit fuzzy.

The kind of 'migraines' that I get are somewhat misnamed; they are basilar artery type and require my vesels to open instead of constrict. So I can't take the regular stuff -- they could push me into a stroke! It's a pisser, huh?
I'm trying to get into a headache clinic so I can find out about taking a vasodilater (as opposed to vasoconstrictors like imitrex) when I feel an attack coming on.

wow, you poor thing-that really sucks-I'm sorry. My aunt suffers from those and Tegretol works well for her although I don't know the mechanisms behind why it works well for her.
I wish I could help you feel better. How often do you get them??? I'm sure you've been asked this.....but what about good ole Topamax:S?? Would that help something like the kind of migraines you get or no?> >

hey,
yeah, i suggested the topamax suggestion from my dr., but i think he's had more positive experience with topamax.
my therapist also had negative things to say about depakote, so now i'm going with the effexor. she suggested i consider neurontin.
i am keeping an open mind to the depakote, though, as i don't know if the effexor will work.

hey there, I'll tell ya, my PCP doc is a great woman and very knowledgeable. She now speaks at conferences about AD's that counteract migraines and Effexor is at the top of the list, she just recently told me. I have taken Depakote girl........ and for me, I gained weight and lost a lot of hair- I didn't go bald or anything like that bad-but it was quite disturbing. I don't know how Neurontin fairs with your type of migraines though. God, I know I am only 1 piddle in the pot, an online dot at that, but from my experience, I would go with the Effexor-but only if, and only if, you do not want to gain weight, or lose hair. But ya know you may not get those side effects-but they are common (read up), so I should shut my trap-just my experience and that's what this forum is all about lol. I wish you the best books-I really do, migraines are not fun. Let us know how it goes.

Question about depakote; did it cause any mental slowing or lots of sleepiness?
I think I'm going with the effexor, but yeah; I'm fearful. I'm realizing that the 'headaches' I had on my 3 day bout of strattera last week were probably the severe kind; I'm realizing that the mental confusion I have this week is due to the 'headaches'(basal artery migraines) I had last week, not just the one I had 2 weeks ago. If I wake up with a headache my first day on effexor, I'm ditching it for Depakote.
If that happens, I will join you in the fat and bald aisle. Then we can get jobs as middle-aged male comedians on prime time tv.

LMAOROTF -you are too funny. In all seriousness...you are welcome-it can be tough I understand;)Depakote for me caused a little mental slowness but not much sleepiness-overall it just mellowed me out-it just did nothing for my moods-and I would not tolerate the side effects-that's just me. I know absolutely nothing about strattera :( I should check out a search. And about an Effexor headache.... some do get headaches when they first start BUT again you may not, it's up to you to give it a chance if you DO get a headache to tough it out (you wanted to hear that like you want another basal artery migraine) just kick me in the arse:S
