I take 400 mg of Seroquel nightly - not specifically for insomnia of course. I've been diagnosed with Bipolar II and ADD and Lord knows what else, I was pretty screwed up. (How's that for honesty.) It took awhile to work up to that dosage - I believe I started out at 100 mg after I bombed out on Depakote.
It's quite sedating, and I would be very tired for awhile each time the dosage was increased.
Also you can't take it if you've been drinking alcohol - it will make you sick. By now I've adjusted nicely and no longer have trouble with side effects. And as long as I take the Seroquel at night, I sleep just like normal people do, it's bizarre. I used to either sleep all the time or not at all in manic cycle, I would go and go and go until I was sick with exhaustion but still couldn't sleep for very long. I didn't like the Seroquel at first because it made me lethargic but the insomnia was worse, it was torture. So now I'm thankful that I stuck it out with the Seroquel while my system was still adjusting to it.I've also been prescribed 25 mg tabs of Seroquel for anxiety (in addition to the maintenance dose) and 100 mg tabs PRN for insomnia before I was started on Seroquel as a regimen, and it worked pretty good. You might be able to get results with a low dosage if you don't need the industrial strength like me 8^)

For pure anxiety and maybe a touch of depression, there is nothing better than Xanax. Find a doctor who understands how well this medication works, with minimal side effects.

For me the best anxiety combo is Remeron 30 mgs. with Zoloft 12.5 mgs. The Zoloft is the one that has really done the trick.

When my anxiety is at a point of no return, some call it status panicus, basically non-stop panic. Bloody awful, you lose about 10 to 20 pounds a week. The only thing that will help is taking ativan continuously. But I suggest taking an AD as well, like lexapro if it is working, but make sure you are taking a benzo enough that you don't get break through anxiety. Don't just take it prn, take it continuously to give your body/mind a break from the constant anxiety. They now have xanax xr out which might be good, because it lasts longer. Once you have been anxiety free for a good week, start doing the meditation, abdominal breathing, self-help books, CBT, exercise and diet, etc.
I find for me the trick is to give my body a break from reacting to my thoughts, once my body quits reacting to my thoughts I start to get better. Unfortunately for me once I get better I get into old habits and don't take care of myself, so I will be better for years at a time, and then fall back into the extreme suicidal anxiety. Then it's back to the drawing board all over again. I am trying to stay on the band wagon and try to meditate, positive self talk, keep taking an AD, but I tend to forget sometimes, but I am trying to make a better attempt.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

> please give me your opinion ,the people like you are better than any book or dr> you lived it and if your cured ,tell me whats best! im sick of being anxious!,(on 10 mgs lex 6 months+lil-bit of diazapm throughout the day, still anxious)>Ihave had the best results (actually the only thing that has helped at all) is xanax. The regular xanax is a pain though, because of its very short half-life. I found I needed to take .25mg 4 or 5 times a day and .5mg at night. I'm now taking the new xanax XR 2mg once daily and it's much smoother...no now its working , now its not. But it doesn't last 24hrs...so I usually take .25-.5 at night to relax enough to sleep. Paxil, Prozac and Wellbutrin made my anxiety/panic much worse. Hope this helps some...I think I know how you feel, and it ain't pretty. Best of luck to you. Worrier.

I have been on xanax for 10 years now and am really curious about the xanax XR. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

>It came out in May, it's an extended release form of xanax....instead of lasting about 4 hours one pill in the morning should get you through pretty much the whole day. My pdoc said some people take it twice a day, but that seemed to leave me pretty lethargic the next day...as I said it doesn't last 24hrs but I don't have to make sure I have several with me whenever I leave the house. I do,as I said usually take .25-.5mg at night. Ask your pdoc about it. One drawback, it's new and therefore alot more expensive than regular old generic xanax. Worrier.

Thanks worrier,
I am a little scared to try anything new, when I first got my panic attacks 10 years ago, they tried everything and I found the xanax to be the only thing I could tolerate. Well, now I am up to 8mg a day and trying to wean down to the "normal" 4mg a day, but it's not easy. Does this xanax feel like the other xanax?? What are the major differences, if any?!
Thanks =)

>I usually take 1 mg of ativan to alleviate the depression/anxiety but my pdoc suggested I give xanax xr a try. It did quell the anxiety but left me with a flat, dull, lifeless feeling. Ativan is far superior for me.

> Thanks =)>I know all too well the fear of trying anything new, I've had some real med disasters and am pretty much terrified of any new drug. I think you'll be pleased and safe with the xanax XR...the effects are pretty much just like regular old xanax but without the "rollercoaster" effect...you know, you can feel it take effect and feel it quit working. For me regular xanax had a really immediate effect but I had to take it about every 4 hours. With the XR you don't really feel that immediate effect, but once you'll be able to get through a whole day without reaching for that pill bottle. I will say it doesn't last 24hrs, so I had been taking .25-.5mg of the regular stuff at night. Today my pdoc suggested taking 1mg of the XR twice daily instead. We'll see how that goes. I still keep the regular stuff in case of a really bad episode, but I haven't needed it during the day at all. Good luck to you. Worrier.

> I started to have panic attacks 1 year ago. I have been on a couple of different medicines. I was put on Zoloft, which did not work for me at all! Every time they raised my doseage, the attacks got worse. I found a great doctor who took me off from the Zoloft and let me tell you, the withdrawl symptoms were horrible. I wanted to go to the emergency all the time! Anyways, I then got put on Effexor. That did not really work for me, either. Although, I am still on 150mg of it. My doctor also put me Klonopin. So, I was on both medicines. When Xanan XR came out, my doctor took me off the Klonopin and put me on the Xanax. So, I take two pills a day, (1mg), every 12 hours. I also take the 150mg of Effexor.
I have been on the Xanax XR for a little over a month now, and I have only had 2 panic attacks. I think this is the best medicine I have ever been on. The only side effect I get from the medicine is that I am very, very sleepy all the time. I sometimes feel a little disoriented. Anyways, if you are not on Xanax XR yet, talk to your doctor about it because it could work wonders!

I just made the switch-over to Xanax XR from Klonopin. I take it early in the AM when I wake up. I like the fact that it does not afford me instant gratification, because I tend to have an addicitive personality when it comes to Benzos. If you're looking for a nice dreamy high as an added side effect, Xanax XR is probably not right for you.
Instead, the drug seems to "come to life" throughout the day when my body needs it, for example in stressful situations. I also take 15mgs of Remeron at night, but am slowly weaning myself off of this.
This is the end of the thread.
