Ok, I did a search on babble and didn't get much so I'm asking those out there who have been on lithium or are taking it now to let me know what to expect in the way of good effects AND bad.
Could anyone help me with that?
thanks in advance

Tina,
I was only on lithium for about 2 months, but here is my experience, fwiw:
Good effects--definitely improved my mood--less depressed.
Bad effects--for me, there were two: Thirst and thyroid effects.
I was very thirsty all the time. Watch out for what you drink, too. I developed cravings for sugary drinks, and was insatiable. I was addicted to regular Coke as well as all those fruity drinks. All that sugar--not good for me for a number of reasons, including weight gain. If you can stick to water or diet drinks, it is probably better.
Also, don't go on a low-salt diet--apparently, if you do not get adequate sodium intake, the lithium replaces the sodium in the cells, which isn't good.
Monitor your thyroid. I have hypothyroidism, and lithium exacerbated it. It doesn't mean you'd have to stop the lithium, but if it does affect your thyroid, you might need thyroid meds, too, while on lithium.
Good luck!

hi noa.,
was just reading your post ,,
did you know an excess of caffine(you said you drank alot of coke)is a cause of weight gain..
for some it is just 1 cup of coffee or a pop...
it also makes it harder for your body to asorb the essentials from your food...
stop caffine for 1 day and you will notice a deffinate "withdrawl"...

odd you mention this-I started Topamax and I know peeps have lost weight on that med but I also stopped drinking caffeine and cokes, etc because they all taste like metal so I'm wondering if the weight loss is due to the no caffeine thing too? Isn't caffeine supposed to be "bad" for women too? I heard that from some guy.
