OK,
It's been uncomfortable sleeping weather here in Oakland for the past couple of days. This weather pattern will break on Saturday morning. Right now it's 90 degrees in my apartment and I have all fans going. I don't have air-conditioning because here in Oakland I don't need it. My experience is that it's only this hot for at most a week each year.
Anyway, I just took Benadryl 50mg an hour and a half ago with 400mg Valerian. This did not do the trick. About a half an hour ago I took 25mg more of Benadryl and 400mg more of Valerian. Sorry, no dice. It's not working. My sinusus feel very clear though.
If this does not stop soon I'm going to take some of my codeine cough syrup. This is my "heavy hitter" at least lately for insomnia. It sucks that I'm going to be out of it when I take this last dose. I can't get more because I don't have any real reason to take it besides the insomnia. I was prescribed in 4 months ago when I had Bronchitis.
Anyway, I miss my Klonopin. I slept well on that for about a year without having to increase the dose from 1mg.
I have some dihydrocodeine and valium on the way from a source that I cannot mention here. I know I probably should see my doctor about this insomnia because lately it's been getting worse.
I used to have terrible insomnia before getting treatment for depression.
The insomnia seemed to return as I added an inhaled steroid to my arsenal for treating the asthma. Maybe I need to see the doctor about this possible side effect. My gp is not shy about prescribing meds. He is very free with his prescription pad.
I wish I had answers for this current struggle with with insomnia. Maybe when the weather breaks it well ease somewhat. Then again, before it got hot the insomnia was steadily getting worse.
I really hate having insomnia again. I had chronic insomnia growing up. It finally abated mostly when I got treatment for the depression. Not it seems that it's back with a vengence.
I don't want to hear anything about sleep hygene. I go to bed at a very regular time and I leave my bed at a regular time every day. I don't always get to sleep right away once I'm in bed. Hence the problem with insomnia.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I hate being in this spot again. I thought I had this problem licked...

Simcha

What happened with the Klonopin?? I remember a long time back when you started it and that it worked so well for you!! I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble again. I wish you the best of luck getting sleep. I watched a horror/thriller movie on TV last night called "Catching Sleep" starring Jeff Daniels. It is about the devastating psychological effects of insomnia. The movie was creepy. I wouldn't recomend it if you are depressed, but after seeing it, and seeing your post, I felt like sending you a message of support.Hang in there!!

MB,
The current pdoc took me off of it. He seemed to think that Neurontin would work better for my bruxism. That was my main complaint when the older pdoc prescribed it to me.
He told me that Klonopin disrupts normal sleep cycles and that it could lead to more depression. He also said that the Neurontin would help me sleep. It did for a while on 600mg. The bruxism is under control yet I'm having some insomnia lately.
Thanks for your support.

Seroquel took care of my insomnia when NOTHING else worked. Some people get excellent results from as little as 25 mg a night. It's been my experience that once you've found the minimum dosage that's effective for you, there's no need to keep increasing the dosage as you would have to do with regular use of benzos. Anyway it can't hurt to ask your doctor about it.

I'm still taking 600mg of Neurontin at night. It does work for the Bruxism. I'm now having insomnia.
Thanks,

Hey how are ya:
I know there is a stong link between heat and feeling mentally unwell. Besides airconditioning, you may want to look into 2-3 showers a day, and get a dehumidifier. Use tons of nice pleasent body washes and such with showers. I might also suggest an antidepressant with a heavy benzo..but it seems that may not be for you.
Anyhow..stay peaceful..:-)

I'd think that not being able to sleep disrupts sleep cycles much more than Klonopin does.
I sleep much better and more consistently while on Klonopin, and haven't noticed any decreased quality of sleep. My pdoc doesn't seem concerned about this with K, which I take daily, although he does have this concern about Xanax (which I use for very occasional insomnia, which is OK with him).
I still take Neurontin, but it doesn't seem to do anything for me, positive or negative. I told my pdoc I'd probably discontinue it and he said sure -- no point in taking an extra med that doesn't work.

> SimchaSimcha, I've been having really bad sleep deprivation for a couple of months (3-4.5 hrs sleep every night). I did a short trial (2 weeks) of Keppra as an add-on to my Depakote (but stopped Effexor), and I slept marvelously on the stuff, but I seemed to get more depressed and anxious. Well.. I asked my pdoc for some more Keppra (staying ON the Effexor), and I've slept great the last two nights. WOW-six-seven hours! I'm taking 250mg of Keppra twice daily. I get a little listless in the day from it-but I can sit really still on the stuff. I don't know if it would poop-out like the N. did for the insomnia or not. I was taking larger doses of clonazepam to fight the insomnia and it wasn't as effective for it like it used to be. You are trying to sleep while it is hot-if you have windows open you are probably getting noise, too. See if you can at least get a window unit where you sleep-something--if I had to put up with sleeping in 90 degree temperatures I would be a VERY unhappy camper...
