Titration of Lamictal? Help - frustrated.

Posted by Maxime on June 20, 2003, at 20:02:13

So now I am at 25 mg of Lamictal. I am still suicidal and suffering from mixed states. I know that 25 mg of Lamictal isn't going to help. I have to up somewhere between 200-300 mg.

So for how long does the 25mg every two weeks rule last. Is this forever? Is there anything on the internet that would tell me how fast I can go?

I AM SO FRUSTRATED!!!! My GP isn't comfortable with psych meds and I am on a waiting list to see a PDOC which will take 6 - 9 months.

Does anyone have a copy of the PDR? Does it give a titration schedule in there? Because that is what she will go by. Sigh.

I was living in the States when the PDOC I was seeing started me on Lamictal. He also I would probably have to add Trileptal but wanted me to try the Lamictal first. There is no way my GP will prescribe me the Trileptal since I wasn't already on it when I saw her upon my return to Canada.

I can't handle this anymore!!!

So any info on tritration would be greatly appreciated.

Max

Hey Maxime,
Sorry to hear that things aren't going so well for you.
I am looking at the BNF (british National Formulatory) so I don't know if it's the same in Canada, but the recommended titration schedule is this: LAMOTRIGINE (Lamictal)
Monotherapy - initially 25mg daily for 14 days, increased to 50mg for further 14dyas, then increase by max 50-100mg every 7-14days.. Usual monotherapy 100-200mg daily in two divided doses (ie: half in the am, half in the pm.)

Hope this helps.
You should double check with your GP, that that is what you require, because the titration is different depending on what other meds you're taking AND it's only liscensed in the UK for epilepsy, so dose for BP may be different.

Take care and keep me posted.
By the way: am on Zyprexa again, the p.doc got his way and ruined my hightened sensitivity. (re: my last posts)

Thanks Taylor. I found some "unofficial" sites that seem to go much quicker, but I don't want to risk getting the rash.

I read your post about the Zyprexa ... I hate that stuff!!!! So have you already started to take the tegretol as well?

Your hypomania posts have made me laugh ... couldn't help it. :-)

But hey, at least you are avoiding the hospital - way to go!!!

My pdoc said 25mg a week was the rule. They just said, "be on the look out for the rash, if you see it stop fast." Truth be told I cheated a little, rushed things a teensy bit. I don't recomend that. I needed something to tide me over while the Lamictal took its sweet time. I was hurting worse than ever. It scared me.(that bad) I find that when my pain is excruciating then Pindolol a.k.a. Visken takes the edge off enough for me to bear another day. It is a beta blocker. It doesn't make everything roses. It just puts the fire out. Hang in there. Lamictal has been the best thing I've tried to date. And I have tried too much for too long.

Thank you for giving me some hope ... I sure need it now. It's hard not to want to rush the titration though. :-)
