Clonidine experiences

Posted by ace on June 13, 2003, at 23:50:25

Hi guys/gals,
I'm contemplating this as an augmenting agent before we try a more riskier one (ie Zyprexa). It's showed efficacy in ADHD, OCD, PTSD, and derealization - but no depression I believe.

Any opinions? I'm using primarily for...you guessed! - a bit of residual derealization/phobic anxiety and OCD (after my best friend Nardil gave them a nice kick in the teeth!)

Thanks comrades,
Ace.

you`re probably still pissed at me for my thoughts on derealization, but you asked so i will say something as i have extensive experience on this drug.

it made me irritable as hell, mainly just on the first day, and was quite sedating. it did nothing for derealization to me at all. it was pretty good for OCD/anxiety and ODD/hyperactivity, didn`t do a whole lot for tics, and like a lot of people on it i became more depressed. withdrawal is a *real* bitch, too--anxiety, vommitting, goose-bumps, very bad irritability, and most people experience that as well. it also gives many people nightmares.

by and large, taking my experience and the experiences of the three other people i know who have taken it for neuro/psychiatric symptoms, it isn`t a great drug--the only person i`ve heard say she thought it was great was using it for heroin withdrawals.

No, not at all, I'm grateful you have shared your experience with me.

but you asked so i will say something as i have extensive experience on this drug.

I'm glad you say things the way you see 'em - not many people do these days!

This is getting me excited!

How sedate did it make you? So, in your opinion would you reccomend Olanzapine over it? Even with risk (however small) for EPS?

Take Care,
Ace.

i would definitely recommend clonidine over olanzapine, it is a much safer drug by and large, and some fraction of people get very good results from it.

have you tried lamotrigine or phenytoin for your derealization? those are often considered very good drugs for that symptom, but phenytoin is rarely used in psych patients do to gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth) and hirsuitism (it makes a lot of people very hairy). it is, however, a stronger sigma-1 antagonist, and some people have better luck on it (for epilepsy proceeded by derealization, anyway, i have found no research on it as regards psychiatric derealization). phenytoin is an enzyme-inducer, however. lamotrigine is not.

forgot to add--it is more sedating then benzos, less sedating than antipsychotics--for me, anyways.
