hypertensive crisis

I'm just wondering... have any of you who are on or have been on an MAOI actually had the hypertensive crisis? It just seems so easy to forget or not realize that you are eating something that could precipitate it. I have gone to the emergency room once in my life, when I was 10 and had an appendicitis, and I just can't imagine suddenly having to go. Also, if any of you have gone, do they take you seriously and check your BP right away or make you wait, which seems risky to me?

Go to

there are plenty of people there who could answer that question.

My Mom takes Parnate and has had 2 serious incidents. One crisis associated with some type of liquor in food and the other balsamic vinegar (real balsamic).

It has been very hard to convince ER people that she knows what's going on and what they need to do. In fact, she suffered a significant hearing loss during one crisis and we think that had the ER staff been more responsive, she might have been ok.

She is extremely careful about food - especially restaurants. The two times that she had trouble, she was told that the dishes were ok when the actually weren't.

It's tough, really tough. But she hasn't had any success with other AD's.

We have our fingers crossed for the Selegiline patch.
