Here is my other med question. Since SSRI and related (e.g., Effexor XR) seem to have the sexual side effects and the tricyclics weight gain, etc.. The doctor suggested Serazone.
I have read a lot on this board -- and elsewhere. I know that there are concerns regarding one's liver .... has anyone on the board ever taken it? How much and how long before you saw a change, a real change in mood (depression .... just don't want to do anything ...not suicidal, just absolutely blah ... before the 37.5 mg 1 week and then 75 mg. 4 days of Effexor XR (so last 11 days) ... I didn't have the whatever to even log on let alone post.
Questions: Serazone
Input on effectiveness
Side EffectsThank you all so very much ... 2sense

Hey,
I took serzone about 4 times separately for a total of 3 years. The last time I took it continuously for 2 years.
I'd have to say it worked very well for my ocd/anxiety symptoms. I did feel somewhat drowsy on it at times, but insomnia can be a real problem for me so it was a help in that respect. There were no sexual side effects, and I felt like I had a normal range of emotions minus the severe anxiety.
The risk of developing a liver problem on Serzone is still somewhat low, something like 1 in 30,000 patient years risk. But it is still a risk.
I recently tried to go back on it. In the past on it, I had had mild seizure-like jerks similar to myoclonic jerks but with an electrical plugged-in feeling. I didn't really associate them with the med at the time, but when I tried to restart the same thing happened. Since the drug can lower seizure threshold for some people, it is a problem. My pdoc and I agreed it was better for me not to be on it.
I would try it out; maybe it could help. If not, there's a lot of drugs on the market. Good luck!

I can comment on the liver issue. Dr. Bob had a guest pdoc on this board last year who answered many questions. He said that you don't have to worry about the liver problem for the following reason. A couple of months after you start on Serzone your doc will order a blood test. If your liver is not ok, your doc can change your medication. If your liver is ok at that point, it should be ok indefinitely. So if the problem is going to occur, it will occur early on.
This is the end of the thread.
