I've been on Topamax for bulimia for 3 weeks and it has changed my attitude toward food. I can eat normally and know that I can stop. I still eat more than I should but don't binge anymore and stopped vomiting after one week on the med. Only side effects are very slight tingly feet and some lethargy at 50 mg. b.i.d. Changed from Welbutrin 150SR b.i.d. to Lexapro 10mg. at same time I started Topa.
I'm pleased that the bingeing is under control. Would like to start losing some weight. I'm currently 125 at 5'1".

I'm glad Topomax is working for you. Please be careful about losing weight - you know that a person can switch back and forth between eating disorders and I wouldn't want you to develop anorexia. I have had anorexia for 20 years now and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Hi - I don't know if you read the previous posts about Bulimia, we had a good discussion going there for awhile, I would do a search, if you haven't read them already. I think the desire to be thinner will be a lifelong problem. Congratulations on being able to stop vomiting. I know personally, from having an extremely severe case, how difficult that can be. Does Topomax give you an anti anxiety feeling?
I found that doing something that boosted my self esteem, like volunteering for projects around the community, going to college, working on developing my voice, participating in theatre - some form of art - beit painting, writing, anything to get your mind off the self - and the superimposed ideas that we apply to the self, is extremely helpful. Find out, if you don't already know, where your natural talents are and pour your energy into developing them, or some sort of self growth, and you'll see the need to binge and purge diminish. It may take awhile - for me it took about 7 years, but in the end I was a much more talented and stronger person for it. Best of luck - you have all my compassion!

> MaxDear Max,
Thanks for the warning. Have you been bulimic? I have never been anorexic and believe me I've tried every amphetamine out there to suppress my appetite.I've binged and purged for 37 years so I have some firsthand, if not objective knowledge of bulimia. It's never made sense to me to group bulimia and anorexia as "sister" disorders. To compare the two is like comparing a binge drinker to a teetotaler. I understand that many bulimics, like anorexics, are obsessed with and have a distorted body image. I also understand that anorexics often resort to purging. I am extremely obsessed with my body image and terrified of weight gain, but I don't have a distorted body image and have never been thin. I'm 5'1" and weigh 125 lb. I've never weighed less than 118. Four years ago I was up to 144.
Thanks for the feedback.

I have never been bulimic, but I have been what is called the purging sub-type of anorexia. However, I have a great fear of vomiting so I purge using laxatives and exercise.
I will never be thin enough. Even when I weighed 70 pounds I didn't think I was thin enough. It's an awful disease.

I wish you well, Max.MimiJean
