elavil?

Posted by lia mason on May 26, 2003, at 15:15:16

Hi...

My doc just prescribed this for pain. 12.5 mg knocked me out all the next day. Is that possible? If I stick with it, will sedation wear off?

THANKS!
Lia

Elavil is very sedative. Worked great for sleep didn't it? ;) You have to be on it for a couple of weeks at least before the daytime sedation starts to diminish (it will to some extent). One tip to help reduce the next day "hangover" is to take it about 2-3 hrs before you intend to go to sleep. When it starts kicking in this might be kind of hard to do :), but it helps some for it to not kickin in the middle of your sleep. Hopefully the sedation will diminish enough to where you can tolerate it OK.

Thats a low dose for it to make you sleepy. I think it will wear of the more you get used to it! Hope so!

Elavil was the very first a-d I took! (this was before the SSRI's were introduced). I do not recall the dose I started out or titrated up to, but I DO vividly remember that at the beginning, for the first week or so only, Elavil was VERY sedating. I took it at bedtime and within minutes I was asleep and slept like a baby.

However, about a week or so after, its sedating effect wore off (which I had read and my pdoc at the time told me would probably happen), to the point where it did NOT sedate me AT ALL and I switched to taking it in the morning, remaining fully alert throughout the day!

I remained on Elavil for at least a year and the intial side effects (sedation, dry mouth, etc.) all wore off within 1-2 weeks.

So, my suggestion to you would be to give it at least 2 weeks and if the sedation and any other side effects you have do NOT wear off, contact your pdoc.

I wonder why your pdoc chose an older tricyclic such as Elavil for you in the first place, unless newer a-d's have not worked for you?

thanks! (elavil)!

Thank you so MUCH to those who've posted about their elavil experience. The sedation has been so terrible, I've been on the verge of stopping the med. But I'll give it the 2 weeks my doc has asked for. Your posts have helped me hang in and have hope. MANY THANKS. By the way... I'm taking it just for pain so I may not need to get to a high dose. I'm treating my depression with effexor.

Best,
Lia

Didn't know elavil came in 12.5mg dose. Sounds strange to me unless your splitting a 25mg tab. Elavil comes in 10mg followed by 25mg strength. I started on Elavil 25mg 3x during the day plus 100mg at bedtime. It took 50mg to have a sedative effect. I can't see how 12.5mg can knock you out for a day. And that 12.5mg strength sounds very fishy to me. I would check with pharmacist and doc.
