Buspar works! Klonopin - became habituated to.

Posted by Janelle on May 18, 2003, at 22:20:38

My pdoc and I decided to get me off one or both of the anti-anxiety meds I'm on, and he said let's start with Buspar since that would be easier. Well, after a few days without it I began to become a wreck. Back on Buspar, feeling better again.

Am taking 1mg Klonopin twice a day (long story of why I went from 1mg/day to 2mg/day) and I could swear it no longer does squat because those days without Buspar were he!! with the anxiety.

Therefore, I'm going to ask my pdoc if we can wean me off the Klonopin or at least get me down to what he calls "the lowest effective dose" of the stuff. I had been weaned off it once, only to have an @$$ of a new pdoc put me back on it, so I know I can taper off without major problems.

I just thought I'd put it out there that Buspar, which even I thought was just a placebo, does work, at least for some people, like me!

Hi Janelle-

Did you notice during the days you were off Buspar if there was an improvement in your fatigue? Maybe reducing the Klonopin will make a big difference there. I had an interesting experience a few days ago. I haven't had any Xanax in weeks, but I needed to take one. It really made me even more tired than my usual zombie-ness.

I'm glad you've identified something that works for your anxiety!

Yes, Snoozy during the days I was off Buspar there was an improvement in my fatigue!

And I'm willing to bet the farm that reducing the Klonopin will make a big difference there too! I have a feeling that as I reduce it I will feel more *energetic* and less draggy, at least I hope so.

Thanks for sharing your Xanax experience. These benzo's are something else, huh?

Janelle, what other meds are you taking if you don't mind me asking? Thanks!

Jay, I'll tell you what else I take, but I'm curious why you ask?!

I take Celexa, Synthroid, Klonopin (to be tapered down/off), Depakote, Lithium (very low doses of the latter two), Buspar (low dose) and Seroquel for sleep.

What do YOU take? Just curious. Thanks.

I was just wondering if there was anything in your combo that maybe helped in a 'synergystic' way. (i.e. combined together) I am on a high dose of klonipin (8mg's a day) and it's the only thing that even touches my anxiety. My doc said we could go higher if needed, or add another benzo, or add buspar. I am also on 75mg's of Effexor XR, but that really doesn't do much these days after 5 years of taking it, and I can't bother with side effects at higher doses.

I've been on buspar before, but without a benzo, and even after lengthy trials, didn't do much. I'd like to try high dose buspar, high dose benzo, and possibly stick with or pick another antidepressant. After 11 or so years of all these drugs, my body seems a bit 'immune' to them, and I need crankin high doses to get max benefit. I know this sounds like something an addict would say, but the only way I can tell if a med is working is if I have this bit of mentally feeling 'lighter' (not high..just loose..relaxed...heck I think that is all we strive for, and something so many of us with mental illness can't seem to get to.)

Anyhow...sorry for the long post...just thought it might add some light. Thanx for the response. :-)

You sound a lot better these days compared to where you were a year or two ago. I was just telling Angel Girl the same thing regarding her progress. Both of you are to be commended for your tenacity and perseverance.
