Nardil to Parnate

Posted by cosis on May 15, 2003, at 14:45:53

Hey all

I have a doc appt. tomorrow and my tapering off Nardil is now completed. I want to try Parnate now that I feel the anxiety coming back. I have lost 10 pounds though in less than a week.

Has anyone felt the same social anxiety relief from Parante as from Nardil? Or felt social anxiety relief from Parnate? I usually read it's more for depression but other places it say's it works well for anxiety also.

Nardil was great for my S/A but I couldn't take the weight gain.....

Thanks
Nick

I definitely feel a relief of social anxiety while on Parnate (while Nardil did little for me in that regard). Also, if the weight loss is a good thing, I always lose weight when I go back on Parnate. It has a powerful appetite-suppressant effect (on me, anyway).

What kind of dosage are you on with Parnate and what was your dosage on Nardil?

Can you provide any info on the two as far as when each kicked in and any bad side effects with Parnate?

Appreciate your reply

I've had very different experiences with the two. I was on Nardil many years ago (I'm afraid I don't remember the dose), and was not on it that long because I noticed no positive effects from it.

My problem with Parnate is it always poops out on me after about six months, though during those six months I always feel really good. Whenever I start up again, I feel it immediately, but it takes two to three weeks before I notice an appreciable brightening of my mood. I usually work my way up (slowly) to about 130 mgs daily (which is probably quite a bit for most people), at which point it always begins to konk out. I've only had two problems as far as side effects go. One is insomnia--for which Trazadone is a great help--and the other is high blood pressure, but I think this comes about because I wind up on such a high dose. Overall, I find Parnate (with the notable exception of the diet thing) to have fewer side effects than most other ADs, but that's just me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info!!!

I thought Nardil kind of stopped working as well on my SA but now that I do not have it it's so much worse than it was... I just can't handle the physical symptons....

I hope Parnate works as well :)

As a long-term lover of Parnate, I just wondered how in the world you manage to get up to a dose like 130 mg.--that's more than TWICE the recommended maximum dose. If you don't mind my asking--does your pdoc know about that?

I can't see inside your synaptic clefts but maybe the ultra high dose has something to do with the poopout. Just a guess.

Also seems like a lot to me, I thought 90mg of Nardil was lot.... I wasn't willing to go any higher than that even if results were better

Off to the pdoc's now

My pdoc has one patient on 300mg of Parnate! I think it is good to have a guideline, but we each have to find what works for us. Good Luck, Melodie (Can you imagine taking 30 pills a day????)
