Preventing Zoloft Weight Gain???

Posted by jjana on May 12, 2003, at 14:32:10

Hello all,

I am about to get back onto Zoloft, after a year of being drug and depression free. I was on Zoloft for two years before, and stopped taking it because I was feeling better, and because I had gained 35 pounds. I am (was) a little girl, and 35 pounds was more than a 25% gain. Since stopping, I've only lost about 5 pounds, but I am healthier and don't feel as chubby. I guess I grew into the weight or something.

Anyway, I've recently had an anxiety/depression relapse and was hoping to try a new antidepressant to avoid the weight gain. A couple TERRIBLE days on Lexapro lead my pdoc to suggest I try Zoloft again, because I know it works, even though it made me fat and kinda lazy.

So my question is, I do want to feel better but I REALLY don't want to gain any more weight. I'm comfortable with the more heavy me I've lived with since Zoloft, but more weight would make me really unhappy. Does anybody know of a good way to avoid Zoloft weight gain? Diet? Supplements? Another drug that would help keep the weight off? I'm really worried about this, and I'm hoping there are some preventative measures I can take.

If anybody out there has any ideas, please PLEASE let me know.

THANKS!!!!!
jana

Something that augments dopamine might help keep the weight off. (I'm thinking of your typical ADHD drug, like Ritalin.)

Or you could even combine it with a med that makes people lose weight, like Topamax. (Topamax is an anti-epileptic that is frequently used to help people lose AD weight gain.)

I understand how you feel; I've gained 20 pounds since beginnign Zoloft a year ago I am now going off, due to health risks (diabetes runs in the family), and negative side effects.

I just read something on prozactruth.com that suggested supplementing the diet with omega 3 fish oil to help keep metabolism up while on antidepressants and lose weight. I've heard of taking omega 3 for mood stabilizing, but never heard of it helping with weight control.

I can't tell if the information on that website is any good. Does anybody have experience with omega 3 oils combined with Zoloft, and did you lose weight? Has anybody tried it specifically for this purpose? Or is it all just a sham? I'm thinking about trying fish oil anyway, to help elevate my mood, but it would be great if it helped me lose weight too.

any info would be GREAT!!!

THANKS!!
