Anyone tried trimipramine (Surmontil) ?

Posted by SLS on May 7, 2003, at 8:25:30

Hi.

My doctor mentioned trimipramine as a possible treatment for me. I'm concerned with sedation and weight gain.

Any input would be appreciated.

Scott,

I've been really hesitant to respond to your post. I'll explain why; I myself have never tried surmontil, but my aunt (who lives in Canada), has been on it for 40/50 years, maybe longer. For most of the time she found it very effective for her depressive illness. She said to tell you the sedation (other than at night) wears off over time, but she always had to battle with her weight. The main reason I didn't want to post is that my aunt is now 80, and ten years ago she developed full blown parkinsons disease, and her consultant said it was due to her prolongued use of surmontil - though he could have gotten that wrong. We know well that doctors don't always know best, and certainly don't have all the answers.

I was sorry to read your post, because I really hoped you would by now have found the magic combo that works for you. I sometimes find myself wishing all out brain chemistries fit into four neat types, so once someone found what worked for their type, they could pass the message on, and everyone would be feeling so much better!!!!!! It's what I want for everyone at this site, and especially people like yourself who have been around as long as I have.

Take care Scott, and I wish you all the best,
Caroline

PS ...

I am 32 and on anafranil and remeron and since they work I intend to stick with them for life, even if it does possibly increase the risk of developing organic brain syndromes. I'd rather enjoy my life now and for as long as I can than avoid a med which might help me because I'm nervous about a theoretical possibility.

Best, Caroline

I tried Surmontil. It was sedating, but I didn't take it that long (about two months; sometimes the sedation wears off over time). Also, I noticed no weight change. It didn't work for me, but everyone is different, so you might want to give it a try.

Hi Caroline.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I can't tell you how much your warm sentiments lifted my spirits this afternoon. I wish I could write more, but the mental energy just ain't there. I'd love to here more about your four neat types of brain chemisty. You never know where you'll find the magic!

You're right. It has been a long time.

Sincerely,
Scott
