Weird Celexa s/e for 16 yr old!!

Posted by CJ Nightowl on April 10, 2003, at 0:53:39

Hi Everyone,
My 16 year old daughter was put on Celexa about 5 or 6 weeks ago for depression and anxiety. The doc said that "since Mom is successful with it", then the child should be also. She had experienced some panic attacks which were brought about by my 22 yr old son coming back home addicted to heroin. (that's for another time, requiring about a week to write!) Anyway, then came the lack of interest in usual things, not wanting to go to school, etc. So I took her in for counseling and they did the depression and anxiety rating scale, which she scored very high on.

She seemed like she was getting better after about a week on the Celexa, but now she has low appetite, low self esteem (again),trembling of her right hand
(again) which she says is getting worse. I also found an internet link to signs of teens thinking of suicide, that she had been looking at. The Counselor says that she has no plan of suicide in place, she just has been thinking about it. She also was an A/B student and from missing so much school, she is now a C/D student, with seemingly no motivation to get back those A's and B's.

Should this be a big red flag for her to come off the Celexa?? Do we just need to up the dose of it?
Has anyone heard of Celexa causing neurological problems (the trembling hand)?

Thanks,
CJ Nightowl

CJ- I'm almost certain that she needs a dose increase. If I understand your post, she had anxiety, depression, low sel esteem, and no motivation BEFORE starting Celexa. Is that correct? Then, she felt better for a short time after starting Celexa. Then she regressed to the way she was before starting it.

That is classic of someone who needs a dose increase. See what her doctor thinks.
