HELP! I used to be a skinny bitch! At 5'3" I always weighed 105 lbs. until now(I'm 43yrs). Just last week alone I gained 5 lbs.! I'm up to 120 and gaining...Oh no.
Daily, I take Periactin(8mg.), Seroquel(50mg.), Nortriptyline(50mg.), Celexa(20mg.) and
Buspar(30mg.). Can someone--anyone--please give me a clue about which med or combo is doing it? I'd be happy to shed 10lbs. MIMI

I dont know about the other meds you mentioned, but my son recently started Seroquel and is constantly hungry. He has other issues, too, and is anxious and bored, but it seems to me that his appetite is resulting from the Seroquel.

It's a bit diffucult to target one out of those. From experience and from reading Seroquel, Celexa, and Buspar all seem to be notorious for weight gain and increased appetite although your mileage my vary, of course.Hope that can lead you somewhere. Best wishes.

I find it helps me a lot is to go on web and find sites for the meds and check the side effects they have.
It has to be one of the medications that you are currently taking that is causing weight gain. Seroquil does cause weight gain. However to be sure and give satisfaction to you why not check the various sites for the meds you are on and this way you well know for sure what side effects are caused by them.
Another thing you may want to do is to ask your pharmacist about it. They can tell you. Last but not least ask your psdoc.

Seems to have started w/ the addition of Periactin, which is listed as causing weight gain. I'll check the others. MIMI

Of the drugs that you are taking I suspect that the Periactin is the one causing the weight gain. Periactin is an antihistamine and a serotonin antagonist used for many reasons not associated with weight, however, this drug has an "off label" use as an appetite stimulant. This is not one of the FDA approved uses for the drug but is VERY often prescribed for this very thing. Often it is used to increase the appetite of kids who are failing to thrive. It is also used with severely ill patients and elderly patients who are becoming malnourished to help them be able to eat again. This drug will cause a huge increase in appetite and would most certainly contribute to substantial weight gain. The other drugs mentioned may contribute some but I would feel safe in saying it is the periactin causing you the most problem.

Tish,
Yes, it was the Periactin. I've since switched to Ambien for sleep. Periactin did not increase my appetite, however, it did cause my weight to balloon, perhaps in combo with the other meds I take.
Two weeks ago, I quit taking Nortriptyline(after tapering) which caused my intellect to clear up and my appetite to increase due to increased metabolism. My weight is steady.
