Could someone explain, in plain English(!) the difference between Lexapro and Celexa? I ask for myself (currently on Celexa, doing okay, probably won't rock the boat) and my mother who I believe needs an a-d. Thanks.

There is very little therapeutic or chemical differance between the two although escitalopram (lexapro) is reputed to have fewer side effects and to kick in sooner. Once you have tried citalopram (celexa) - succesfully or unsuccesfully, there is very little point in trying the newer version.

As Boba Fat said there are few differences. Lexapro (in plain English so excuse me for those with a more sophisticated knowledge of chemistry) is supposedly half the Celexa molecule, the therapeutic half with the other half being cut out because all it does is cause side effects. From what I have read, however, there does not seem to be much difference between the two. Some have more sides with C, some have more sides with Lex.
I really write to URGE you not to switch from Celexa to Lexapro. Some doctors, and I have to say they are playing a dangerous guinea pig game, have switched patients doing fine on Celexa to Lexapro for no reason other than because the drug company says Lex is better. If you are doing well on Celexa, and you can handle the s/e's stick with it, don't rock the boat.
As for your mom, I would say that since you respond well to Celexa, she should try that, not Lex.
