Zoloft WHO LONG DOES MOM STAY ON IT?????

Posted by canwetalk on March 24, 2003, at 18:51:42

Yeah my mom was put on zoloft for depression. She is coming along very good thank God. She has been on 50mgs for a year now. My question is how long must she stay on this? Her psdoc had told my sister and me it would only be for 6 months but now that has turned into another 6 months. My mom is 87 years old and just hope Zoloft does not cause any other complications for her. Anyone know about this med please post your responses. Many thanks.

Do not take this as insensitive but I would say she should not come off it. There is a strong possibility (though not a probability) that she could have a relapse and don't you think she should enjoy the rest of her life rather than be depressed.

Zoloft is a good medication to use in the elderly because it along with Celexa (and possibly some others) hardly interferes with any other drugs. Also, SSRI's do have w/drawl symptoms, do you want your mom to have to worry about those?

Having said this, I suggest you get the opinion of the prescribing doc AND a second opinion of a psychiatrist regarding the odds of relapse and a third opinion from someone who can tell you what risks a woman of her age runs by staying on zoloft long-term.

JACK
