I've taken both and my experience has been that Zyprexa quieted my mind, but stimulated my appetite big time. It took incredible willpower not to give in to the carbo cravings. I have seen and heard that people can gain like 30 pounds on Zyprexa and develop adult diabetes. I also found Zyprexa sedating although that wore off. I only took Zyprexa for a short period of time.
Seroquel, on the other hand, is like a mild tranquilizer for me. In fact, my pdoc has me on a low dose for sleep only. I have been on it much longer than I was on Zyprexa.
This is just my (one person's) experience. Hope it is of some help.

I've taken both, and I'd avoid them like the plague. Zyprexa has so many unhealthy to right dangerous side effects "it should never have been approved by the FDA" sez my pdoc.
Seroquel seems really pleasent at first, but over the course of months it blanks out the deeper more interesting parts of your mind.
These are drugs for schizophrenia. Shrinks like to throw them at every symptom 'cause it's a quick easy fix for them, and they don't have actually live in the iced down warehoused brain they create. Drug companies make a lot of money off you on these too. Unless you're actively psychotic, I'd question why I was on these drugs.
Well, I already did that. I'm much better off without APs and with a doc who do the work and medicate me properly. I urge you to question why you need this stuff and make a truly informed desicion.missliz

hi cybercafe
i took themboth but zyprexa caused a LOT of weight gain for me. I stopped taking it and lost the weight but not all of it. Seroquel i took a pretty long time but was extrememly sedated on it. both were sedating actually.
geodon is a similar drug and its not cause weight gain.As far as thinking more clearly im not sure which would be better. On geodon i had insomnia for a whie but was also very sedated at times. It was a liitlte strange.

Hi, I've taken both. I concentrated way better on Zyprexa but it was the only med I was on, while going under ECT. I take Seroquel now and am starting to wonder about it more.
Good luck!

Hi, I see my pdoc Friday, and I am going to ask exactly what you say here 'I'd question why I was on these drugs' and also this>> I urge you to question why you need this stuff and make a truly informed desicion... I haven't been doing well and after years of trying to find the right med combo for me, I am starting to fail again with my med combo. I have got to talk to my pdoc
asapthanks for this post, I hope it helped a lot of people as it helped me.

this is probably an atypical case BUT my father took a medium potency typical antipsychotic (perphenazine/trilafon) for 40 years without any noticeable long term damage (i.e. having to raise dose due to tardive dyskinesia) ...
then a doc threw him on lithium and he got kidney damage which has been a *big* problem for himi have bipolar type II (never been psychotic/manic just hypomanic) and
1) zyprexa seems much better for the body than drugs like valporate or lithium ..
i mean they're toxic... need blood tests... can cause hair loss etc2) i also don't feel sedated (once i get my butt out of bed, ug) - valporate made me feel sedated ... lithium i havn't tried but hear it causes sedation??
3) zyprexa controls my bipolar better than valporate did
hey if i started to get numbness i would be off them in a flash but otherwise they seem quite benign compared to other mood stabilizers
of course i welcome debate -- if there is a better option, let me know and i'll take it
i considered switching to lithium but i don't think it would prevent psychosis as well as zyprexa (i take ritalin and my doc tells me i would get psychosis if i went off 2.5 mg zyprexa)
i also worry about the sedation, polyuria/thirst and tremors people talk about ...
.. but i am desperate for any serotonin i can get my hands on so i would love to take lithium rather than zyprexa if i could (i hear lithium has an antidepressant property due to a blockade of serotonin reuptake transport proteins)i am eternally grateful to anyone who can clarify any misconceptions i have

Lithium and Zyprexa are two totally different classes of drug. Lithium is fraught with all sorts of problems, but there are so many better mood stabilizers now you can avoid it. In your dads day, it was the only option. If it fried his kidneys, you probably should avoid it. But now there's Depakote, Tegretol, Trileptal is a wonderful new drug that I'm loving. I'm BP2 as well.
Zyprexa has a lot of awful long term effects like morbid obesity and all the risks that brings, as well as a lot of type 2 diabetes popping up. There was a lot of scandal surrounding the testing of this drug, and a lot of lawsuits for the damage it's caused. It also has a huge aggressive marketing campaign aimed at doctors. It's never really been proven to be any better than Haldol, just a LOT more expensive. I'd do Trilofon before Zyprexa, safer and cheaper. Unless you just have to weigh 400 pounds and die young of a heart attack, then Zyprexa's your drug.
If you have to blow the cash, have you tried Abilify? Not supposed to make you fat and sick, so the quality of life would be much better.
