My doc insists that I go on depakote. I gave it a try at a low dose and was ok. Then I increased my dose a little and started to experience rage, anger, terrible aggression. Thoughts of driving my car into flagpoles or trees crssed my mind. I thought I was going to hurt someone.
I stopped taking it for a couple days, then started again. After a day or so I experienced the same thing. I was mean, explosive.
Could it be something else? Has anyone experienced rage, anger FROM the dep? It is supposed to control anger, not cause it.
I am not a normally ragefull person. Just very anxious-very, very GAD. So this is unlike me.
I looked up some of dep's s/e and aggression is listed as one on the effects, as well as depression for some people.
This new doc says I'm wrong. He says these are NOT s/e from depakote and he says that the dep cannot possible increase my anger and that it is my 'borderline personality d/o' coming out. That's a new one. . . . I have never been diagnosed as having this before and so I do not necessarily agree. If I was this way, I'd be angry and full of rage and aggresson all the time- but I'm not. I'm just sad and miserable in my skin, trembling from anxiety with racing thoughts and nerves on edge-normally, that's my state.Please- anyone tell me if they got adverse reaction to the depakote-besides hair falling out, etc. . .
Please!
My doc was actually laughing at me. I'm begging for help here.

YES most definately!
The first 2 weeks I was almost manic..think for some the adjustment causes this.
Watch out for pms , I presume you are female.

Hi. Do you still take the depakote? Does the rage and anger , adverse reactions such as these go away? Is the aggression just your body adjusting to this med, or does it mean it is the not the drug for you??(me) Please let me know if you are still on it.

Yes the agression has ceased for me..I'd give it 2 weeks - then talk to your doc again.
If I get really bad pmt again ( never had it so bad )I'm coming off it -- not sure if depakote helps me much anyway.Good luck.

Hi, No I stopped taking Deapakote due to the fact that it didn't help me at all and the side effects were too much to bear-thank god it didn't work. LOL I didn't much notice aggression, but yes, it made me get angry feelings, and anxiousness, and feel like I was crawling out of my skin. I'm not on it anynmore, and remember it takes everyone's body to react differently and at different lengths of time.
Keep me posted!

I take low doses -about 250 day slow release tabs. When i took 500 mg I really had the aggression the worse. I stopped the dep twice when I had the aggression episodes, then started again after a couple days or so. Now, after my last incident, I've been off dep for about 5 days.

So, for you the dep has worked and the aggression ceased after a couple of weeks? That sounds promising . . . but you mentioned it made PMS worse-
How long have you been on this med?

Hi Hildi,
I would say Depakote helped me a little with the mania-yes-but just a little, I was on it for only a month, but stopped, like I said, because I could not stand the side effects.
I started back on Lamictal 3 weeks ago which I have taken in the past. It actually helps with my appetite, and more so my mood-just mellows me out, but not too much. I really do well on a low dose of Lamictal, but I think I'm realizing that cycling is a bigger problem with me and it all starts in my head!
I have my days though lol
keep me posted:-)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It does work for my impulsiveness and delusions (if thats what they were:-)) but I have residual depressive episodes-yes the agressiveness has ceased
That sounds promising . . . but you mentioned it made PMS worse-
The first 2 days before I'm a hyper sensitive loony.

> How long have you been on this med?
I think I've been on it 12 weeks but had it increased 3 weeks? ago.
I'm not sure if it is the med for me as I've never known what it is like to have balance.
I sleep a lot (keep missing my other med doses) have to be watching what I eat--I'm on 1000mg.
My motivation is low and never seem to get that contentment feeling--but this is just me.
All the best.
