What a great article, thank you. I am battling with weight gain issues too (30 lbs.). Have you tried any of these weight loss techniques?

Hi,
I was really happy to share that, because I think the effect of the medication weight gain is underestimated. At least in my experience, my Dr's tended to act like it was something to put up with.
Depression makes me feels so out of control and overwhelmed anyway, and then having seemingly no control over that, makes it almost unbearable. To answer your question... Yes, I just started on a low dose of the notorious Zypreza and still have about an extra 25 lbs from before (hats off to Paxil)
I started the Glucophage the same week as the Zyprexa (about two weeks ago) I haven't gained any weight but I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the information it was very interesting.
I just posted a few days ago (further down) asking if anyone knew of any type of drug to take with AD for weight loss, as my weight gain alone could cause me to be depressed.

I couldn't find your other post, so I'll answer here...
I have lost about 15 lbs. (and still counting) in the 2 months I've been on Provigil. It seems to work as a mood-brightener for some people with depression (like me), and the weight-loss benefits are definitely great for my mood...just for your info...
best wishes,
Wendy

I am wondering if my pdoc would prescribe one of these meds for me to help me lose the med weight. Is it common for pdocs to prescribe these? And are they covered by insurance?

I have not heard of Provigil. What type of med is it? Are you taking any other medications along with Provigil? Hope you don't mind me asking all
these questions. One more though what was the Provigil prescribed for?

Hi Rainbow,
My pdoc suggested I take Provigil (I went to him to discuss ADHD-type symptoms). I had complained of hopelessness, apathy, daytime sleepiness, blah feeling, besides the depression (or are all of these depression - who knows?) The ADHD symptoms were the typical inability to concentrate, being late for EVERYTHING, forgetfulness, getting overwhelmed by life, taking forever to finish projects or work-related tasks. Etcetera...
Provigil (modafinil) is related to Adrafinil in Europe & Canada. Provigil causes fewer problems with the liver, though, so it's been said to be a better drug. It is a drug for narcolepsy, and is sometimes referred to as a "wakefulness agent." But they have found that it does help depressed people cope better by elevating mood, and keeping daytime sleepiness at a minimum. It's been tested and used by fighter pilots who need to stay awake for long missions, although it does not affect their ability to fall asleep when they need to. So some are viewing it as easier on the body than typical stimulants (dexedrine, etc).
There have been MANY discussions of provigil- modafinil on this board. Do an advanced google search on it, and specify "dr-bob.org" as the Domain at the bottom of the form, and you will only get hits for this site.
As far as I know, it isn't difficult at all to get this drug prescribed. I must say, though, that not everyone loses weight on it; what it does for me is relieve the compulsive putting stuff in my mouth when I'm not really hungry (wellbutrin does this for me, too). And it has brightened my mood considerably. And yes, my insurance covers it, no problem. It is legit...
Hope this helps, and don't forget to do a search on this site - there's a lot of information here.
Best wishes,
Wendy

> LAHi LA,
I hope the post above to Rainbowlight answers some of your questions, and you can search on google for more information. I also take 400 mg of Wellbutrin SR every day. I lost the 30 lbs I gained on 4 years of Zoloft when I started the wellbutrin. It's such a drag gaining weight while on the SSRIs in particular. When you're depressed, that's all you need is another blow to your self-esteem...
One thing I forgot to say about Provigil is that it seems to get prescribed a lot for people with ADHD. I think my pdoc (who is an ADHD specialist) has had a fair amount of experience with prescribing it to his patients... he says he has never had a patient go OFF the provigil... interesting, isn't it? (Personally, I feel this is a kind of wonder-drug for me...)
It's fine to ask questions, I'm very glad to help in whatever way I can..
Best wishes,
Wendy

FYI, you can search here again, too, at least for now. But the index only goes up to June of last year (because I changed the way posts were saved then)...
