I haven't read this anywhere. Am I alone? Since the prozac kicked in (about 5 years ago) I have been totally obsessed with sex! I am bi-polar but I've only had a few real manic episodes (no one is safe then!) I also take wellbutrin now so I'm just awake more often to think about sex! I'm suppose to be taking Depakote but I found that I am unable to have an orgasm while on it, so I don't take it. My pdoc knows all of this. He wants me to take the depakote and he'll rx Viagra for me. I'm a woman and I feel like I take enough meds already.
btw, my husband and I are fine with this side-effect.

I'm just curious - how many mg are you taking?

Yes, definately. I was that way on prozac and I was so amazed to hear other people having the opposite effect. Prozac increased my sex drive enormously. I was taking 20mg day and obsessed with sex.
I stopped taking prozac after awhile because of other side effects. Also, after a while, it just stopped working on the depression and made me more anxious.
I think that prozac makes me hypomanic--thus the increased appetite for sex. I am back on it now but I only take a small dose because I'm afraid it'll increase my mania and anxiety.
My dr. says to take depakote-he insists that I start dep- but you just mentioned it makes one inorgasmic ???
Is this true? If so, I don't want it!
I have asked questions about depakote here on this board, regarding sex, and no one has responded by saying that it kills your sex life (like so many other meds do). Are you speaking from personal experience with the dep, or from what you've heard?
I've been contemplating this depakote thing for a while, so I'm very curious about ALL the s/e. I like having a sex drive and don't want to lose it again!

Hildi,
Yes, I do speak from my own experience. I'm suppose to be taking 100 mg of depakote. I'm taking 40 mg of Prozac down from 60. I like feeling like this! I'm so glad that someone else has had this too. I'm not craz...er, nevermind.
Depakote works as a downer for me. I'm not manic right now, but if I do become manic, I depend on my family to tell me when to "take a pill, mom".
I'm also taking 250 mg of Welbutrin, down from 300.

For what it's worth, I was on 80 mgs of Paxil and it also increased drive, but caused anorgasmia. Now have backed down to 20 of Paxil and added Buspar and Trazadone...hoping things improve. I am male. Hope things improve for you too.

I had this the first time I was on Prozac and having the best results. Now, things have gone the other way and I have difficult achieving orgasm, but I do achieve it! I remember reading about people on Prozac who were having spontaneous orgasms. I say relax and enjoy the ride, cause it could change at some point!
