Hi all, after reading a post, I thought this may help some of you-remember, though, this are my experiences:
1995-started first AD(Prozac) and first OCD med (Anafranil) went from 133to185 in less than a year.
1996-started Ativan Only=NO WEIGHT GAIN
1998-started Effexor for the first time, weight gain of about 9 Lbs.
1999-started AP (Seroquel) went from 166-210 in 1 year
2002-went off Effexor-gained 20 Lbs.
2003-went back on Effexor-lost 10 Lbs.
**of course there are other factors like hormones, exercise, and food played a little role in my weight-I say little because I was not eating that much-**EXCEPTION Seroquel-definate appetite increase led to weight gain for me.
I have to say that this took a lot of guts for me to post, not that I want a Brownie button, but because all my life I was thin-always, I have gained a lot of weight and it has taken a huge toll on my self-esteem, I don't like posting my weight on the internet-what woman would? But, I enjoy being honest.
***
This is just a little, but most, of the effects I have had concerning the issues of weight gain and psych meds, if anyone is interested in more I would be happy to share.
Hope this helped anybody:-)

The med weight gain is getting to me too. I have put on 30 pounds and I can't seem to get it off. The Remeron is killing me! No matter how hard I work out on this med I can't get my weight to budge. And going off the med isn't an option, it's one of the few I actually feel good on.

Good for you! I'm so proud of you for doing that! It is SO wrong that we still suffer from body image problems. It really shouldn't matter. I've had a little problem now that I'm trying some new drugs. It's tough but what can you do?

Krissy,
Thanks for sharing your experience. I think it is important that you can examine your history with enough clarity to identify these patterns and the potential cause/effect relationships. I have developed a distrust of SSRIs over the years because they all seem to deliver decreasing efficacy and increasing body weight over time--why start down that road? I realize they can help some people for awhile, but I've become quite reluctant to use them. Right now I'm on Lamictal and Wellbutrin which have not caused weight problems for me. Of course, those wouldn't work for everybody and who knows what the future holds, even for me. I think we all agree, WE NEED BETTER MEDICATIONS for these illnesses. Thanks for your post.

Hi Karen :-)
Thanks for your kind post. My body image problems go way back, and being overweight at the moment gets me more depressed a lot of times. I think there are some deep issues concerning my feelings about actually taking action to lose these excess punds. I visualize myself feeling great and being thin again, and I wonder too, yeah, what can we do? But, I really do know what to do and I will be working very hard on the physical aspects of getting this weight off as well as the emotional aspects as to why I don't feel worthy of being at a decent weight-one where I'm more comfortable and self-confident. It used to be for looks only, but now, at 32, I want to lose weight more for health reasons, but still, of course, to look better and healthier.
I met a girl last night, at Karaoke and she was an awesome singer with a great talent. She was telling me how she had made it through several rounds of taht show American Idol, but they cut her off because Paula Abdul and that other guy, Randy flat out said you have a great voice, but you need to lose wieght. Hollywood can be a little shallow when it comes to weight. LOL
What are your experiences with the new drugs you are trying concerning weight and what are they?
I hope to hear back,
All the best, Kristen

I am male and am gaining weight on Paxil even though my eating is pretty good...I plan to wean off Paxil for this and other side effects...am trying Buspar and trazadone to sleep. My cardiologist says I just need more exercise and eat less, but I don't think he is up on the impact of SSRI's and metabolism. My eating and exercise is already pretty good. But try telling a cardiologist his business...

Hi trex,
I hear you here. I don't think some docs are up on the impact of SSRI's and metabolism either but some are wonderful:-)
I didn't even notice if I gained weight on Paxil-didn't take it that long, ended up in ER with chills, sweats, and manic as all get out!
I really hope you find a med that works for ya!
Can I ask how many mg of Trazadone you are trying? I tried it like for 2 nights-but didn't notice any help for sleep. My pdoc suggested it for sleep, but at the moment, I'm not on it. Still thinking about it though.
Take Care, Kristen:-)

Hi, thanks for reply. I am taking 50 mgs of trazadone and 20 mgs of Buspar...and I cut Paxil to about 20 mgs (from about 80! way too much Paxil, but I didn't know any better). I want to drop the Paxil completely, but the doc said I shouldn't do that quickly. The Traz makes me sleep pretty good and the dreams are very vivid and so far pretty good...like going to the movies every night. Keep me posted.

Hi trex,
thanks for replying. So, 50mg of Trazadone at night. I shouldn't medicate myself, however, I may try 50mg tonight to see if I sleep better. One minute I am bitching about the amount of meds I am taking, and here, I am thinking of taking another one too now. UUUUUGGGHHHHHHHHH
Keep me posted concerning your Paxil.
All the best, Kristen
