Prozac anyone???

Posted by Edgefield on March 11, 2003, at 15:22:27

I've been on Lexapro for almost three months and although it has worked with my anxiety and anxiety triggered depression, after almost 3 months I'm still not back to my old self....I would like to hear from other who have had good results with Prozac. Please let me know what to expect. I meet with my dr. on Thursday to discuss other options. It might not be Prozac, but I've heard good things about this med. I've also heard that newer AD came out about two months ago...does anyone know anything about an newer AD other than Lexapro? I would like to have alot of questions for my dr. when we meet on Thursday to discuss other options. Thanks :)

Hi Edge- I have been on Prozac for about 5 months. I also used it about 5 yrs ago with success. The only thing I will warn you about is the Prozac made me very anxious in about week two and subsided about two months later. I just used a small amount of Xanex to get me by. Also the sexual side effects suck. I tryed Gingko and that helped there. Good luck.

Prozac has been the best of them all for me. I do not have any sexual side effects with it. It is the only SSRI that didn't hurt my sex life. It does however ruin my sleep. I took small dose Remeron for about a year to put me to sleep. But then after I heard about and read about all the great stuff about combining Prozac with Zyprexa, well, I switched to Zyprexa and have been real happy with it.

Prozac alone is ok, in my opinion. But to really increase the odds of success, and the odds of success coming quickly, a bit of Zyprexa at dinner time can work great. 2.5mg t0 5mg. Don't let its name...antipsychotic...scare you. It is a dopamine and serotonin antagonist. When combined with Prozac, it dramatically increases neurotransmitter levels.

Your doc will most likely start you out on 10mg or 20mg Prozac capsules. Here's a neat trick. Dump the contents of a capsule into a glass of orange juice. Stir it well. Drink a custom sized dose, starting with just a few sips at first. Then once you know what it feels like, you can increase your dose sizes as desired. The orange juice mixture can be stored in the fridge for about a week. Just stir it well each time.

Rambling. Hope this helps.

This information is helpful. It's amazing how med. affect us all differently. Some people complain about the sexual side effect of Prozac while others do not have any problems. What about weight gain? I've been gainig weight on Lexapro, because it has increased my appetite for carbohydrates. I'm craving foods that I never really liked. Thanks again..

The Prozac make me have no appetite. I only take in the morning otherwise I can't sleep. So that is one good thing huh?

***So you say that you do not have an appetite :) Already Prozac sounds good. I'm looking forward to meeting with the dr. on Thursday and discussing all of my options. Right now I'm taking Lexapro and Neurontin. Today was the first time that I felt as if the Neurontin is improving my mood. Thanks for sharing your experience with Prozac :)

*****Did you have success in trying this orange juice method or did you still feel the side effects? So, let me see if I understand. Just empty one capsule in a glass of orange juice and I can sip on this all day. It sounds good to me, I'll add this to my list of topics to discuss with my doctor. I'm not even sure if she will prescribe Prozac. The doctor who prescribed the Lexapro would not prescribe Prozac because she said it is too activating. I think all of these ADs are activating, that's why we have the side effects. Thanks again!

Hi, Prozac was the first AD I went on. It did wonders on my depression-I only had to take 40mg. The problem was, I was feeling soooooooooooo wonderful that my appetite soared-and I gained nearly 80 Lbs. I was also on Anafranil which tends to be weight gainer.
I would give Prozac thumbs up! It helped my depression very, very well, it was just the weight gain that I could not tolerate-and that made me more depressed, so I went off it. Now, I'm probably the one of the VERY few who gained weight on Prozac, but I wish you the best and it may be great for you. Good luck and please let me know how your doc appt went:-)
All the best, Kristen

Prozac worked great on my depression but after a year or so I couldn't take anymore of the side effects. I got terrible insomnia from it, which was pretty well controlled with some nortryptiline, but I still had these crazy vivid dreams where my body was full of unwanted energy. It erased my sex drive 100%, so that the sight of an attractive man did not even register on me. He might as well have been a potted plant. It killed my appetite, which sounds OK, but it was so extreme I had to force myself to eat. Food was utterly unappealing (like men).

So basically my brain felt great, but all the pleasure was gone from eating, sleep, and sex. It didn't feel like I was actually alive anymore. I felt like a disembodied head.

I hate Prozac -- would never touch it again. I've taken it for months at a time, and the pattern is always the same: initial anxiety, followed by a wired-yet-numb feeling, with no interest in anything. People found me "weird" on this med, and the side effects were intolerable.

But I know others who think it's great, so it's worth a try -- we all respond differently.

ive been on prozac for 7 months now, and although my weight has skyrocketed up by 30 lbs, i can say that the irritability and irrational behavior has been curbed -

but i have intense cravings for carbs that i never had before and im fighting alcohol temptations that were never there either -

im going to the pdoc this afternoon and asking if there is something that i can add to the prozac to maybe make it work better because i dont want to give up the benefits of working on my rage issues - although its really not working for my depression and adhedonia at all ---
