Best/Worst Meds for Cognitive Functioning/Memory?

Posted by Donny on March 9, 2003, at 17:13:23

I am a student and feel foggy and tired on Celexa, sometimes my memory doesn't do what I want it to.

What experience do you all have with meds and cognitive abilites/memory functioning?

Hi, May I ask how long you have been on Celexa??
I have experienced this with a few meds-but it passed with time as my body got used to the med and it started working. Are you on any other meds? I am a student too and can't afford to be groggy. Are you getting really groggy? In what terms is your memory "not doing what you want it too"?
Please reply, all the best,
Kristen:-)

I was on Celexa for 4 months, then switched to Zoloft because I was too tired. The Zoloft increased my anxiety while making me even more tired than Celexa. After a few months, I switched back to Celexa (about a month ago).

It's hard to explain "foggy." I don't feel mentally sharp, forget things, take time to think of what to say. It's like I am slightly sedated or in slow motion.

I'm an adult student (in my 30s) and need every neuron I can get to fire. Sometimes I feel like saying, "DUH!!?!!" when I'm in class ;)

i think the worst meds for cognitive function are topamax, serzone, antipsychotics... that's just a guess

I agree about the AP-I'm on Seroquel and until I found the right dose I was a definate zombie. Resperdal also gave me this effect.
Best, Kristen

I'm on Lexapro (same thing, but twice as strong) 15mg. I've been on it for about 1.5 years, and I definetly know what you mean.

I have problems with word retrieval. I can't think of the words that I want to say, but I know what I want to say. My memory has worsened also, and I have started having speech problems, like studdering or mixing up words like "Bat Cave" -> "Cat Bave". I feel like I sound like an idiot.

I'm also on Wellbutrin SR 200mg, trazadone 75mg at night, and clonazepam 2.5mg/day. But it is definetly the celexa. I hate these SSRIs. And Celexa ain't that side-effect free like these people want you to believe. When are they going to come out with some GOOD drugs that help with OCD, but don't make me a moron?!

Let me know if you figure out what will help with this problem.

Good Luck,
Eric

From what I've read thus far, dopamine depletion is at least part of the problem. Apparently, it's DA that gives us that sharp feeling and drugs used to treat conditions like ADHD boost this neurotransmitter.

I wanted to add Wellbutrin to the Celexa but my doc was not too excited about it. Although the mental sharpness may have come back, so may the anxiety, it's a mixed bag. Treating anxiety with any sort of sedation, even a mild SSRI, isn't the best thing for cognitive functioning.

Also, from what I've learned, acetylcholine plays an important role in memory encoding and recall. I believe this is especially true for short-term memory. Again, a neurotransmitter that is inadvertantly affected by many of these pharmacological psychiatric treatments, actylecholine depletion is yet another issue to address.

maybe adding a little Strattera (sp?) to the Celexa would do it? The extra norepinephrine would surely help the fatigue, but what happens to anxiety?

The mystery continues.

dude, I have been on Lexapro for 4 months, starting with 10mg and am now on 30mg. sorry to hear that you are struggling with word retrieval, I had that happen today when I couldn't remember the last name of a coworker I've worked with for over a year. looks like it's goodbye lexapro for me. good luck!

FWIW, I can tell you that when I was on Wellbutrin (sr,300mg/day) I was lost. I couldn't recall the simplest words; I'd be in the middle of a sentence and *snap* just like that I became a babbling idiot trying to find the word/s. I felt inferior to say the least.

It has been a few months since I stopped taking it (wasn't working for my depression anyways), and I feel like I'm finally getting past this difficulty. Good luck to you :o)
