Water retention from meds, anyone?

Posted by Rainbowlight on March 5, 2003, at 0:54:55

I am wondering if anyone else has had water retention from meds in excess of 5 pounds or more?

Hmm, I do not know how to tell? I know Nardil causes water retention...

yesiree....... but about 30Lbs. I also have amennorhea, but just had a period-I'm telling ya-I say it like it is-hope I don't offend anyone... Anyway, why do women suffer from this water retention you ask about? I have had a lot lately and for a while. When I was taking 200mg Seroquel, I got it bad-even my loosest socks left a "mark" and I did my doc's advice and pressed my thumb on my shin for only 5 seconds, if there is a mark-measure it and it helps determine if you are retaining water. I AM:-(
What's going on with you?
Kristen

Huge, unbelievable actually, and my Dr. did confirm that it was water. It was so bad he checked my kidneys (about 25 -30 lbs)
Of course having no priorities, I wasn't worried about possible kidney failure, I was just glad it wasn't fat! (bad I know)

I gained that amount from Effexor, and though I switched to Paxil I only lost about 15 lbs of it although I'm on a diuretic.
I don't know what the answer is. I I take my b's drink lots of water excercise...
It feels awful.

Hi, may I ask what diuretic? Today was a start, I took my "Stresstabs"-all B's, some zinc, and folic acid, and I drank 36 oz of water. It is such a relief that I know it is good for me and helping my overall body.
I had been so bloated recently, and my Pdoc prescribed Dyazide-a potassium-sparing dieuretic. It doesn't work as well as just drinking the water. Nice to know, in a way, because I'd rather drink the water, then take yet ANOTHER med for my problems.
Thank you for replying, try not to feel aweful, and hang in there.

I take a potassium sparing diuretic, called spirolactone. It was a last resort. With my previous normal p.m.s water retention; alf alfa tablets, drinking lots of water, fennel seed,
B complex with extra b6 all helped.
With the medication induced retention, they really didn't make much of a difference. Though the prescription isn't really helping significantly either.
I think added excercise is really the only thing
that can help beyond this.

Thanks for all the responses!

I am going to try all of your ideas and drink a ton of water. I sure hope it works, I REALLY don't want to have to discontinue the Remeron. Thanks again!

Have you had your thyroid checked? My wife had terrible water retention when she was on Zyprexa without her Synthroid.
When she takes Zyprexa with the Synthroid, there is no water retention.

Also, just a suggestion and inquiry.... I was diagnosed with PCOS and I find that has caused a lot of water weight gain even when I drink A LOT of water before my period. Do you have PCOS?
I have also heard a lot about the thyroid connection and the use of Synthroid-it has helped a lot of people. My thyroid levels are low-but no doc has suggested I go on Synthroid-I really wonder-I see my doc in 3 weeks, and am going to discuss the issue with her.
I will tell you, I drank 6 cups of water yesterday( 2-24oz bottles of Aquafina) and AWESOME-I got rid of some water-AND it flushed me out, now I am aiming for 8 a day.
Best of luck:-)

Krissy, what is PCOS? I have never heard of it.

Gregg, just had all my bloodwork done, no thyroid problem. I just started a diuretic, seems to be helping some.

Hi there, PCOS is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and is a bugger. It messes with your mental state, causes water retention, etc. It is when a woman fails to ovulate and the eggs build up and may form scar tissue and pain, it can cause weight gain, and is a factor in amennorhea-irregular periods.
Hope this helped?
