OCD and Paranoia........

Posted by daizy on March 4, 2003, at 13:32:24

Is paranoia the same as OCD,or is it more like psychosis?
Thoughts like I have left the bath running even though I know I havnt, half of me knows and half of me doesnt so I have to go and check. Checking things like the cooker is off four times once Ive used it. Thinking that everyone can see me, even through my curtains? Feeling like Im being video'd, Not being able to go out for fear people might see me, that migh just be anxiety??

Does anyone have any input, what exactly is paranoia? Thanx!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far as I know ocd and paranoia are separate things. You seem to describe both: the obsessive concern about your stove being on/off and your paranoia about
being surveilled and observed. I have had bouts of the former, but my primary concern is the latter-- I know that feeling. I don't know what the medical
perspective is, but I am taking Risperdal 2.5mg/day to help me with such problems. I've only taken it for one month now, so can't say how well it's working.
Perhaps someone else can suggest other medications and treatment options. I know how debilitating these worries are, I'd suggest that you get help if you aren't already.
Good luck.

It sounds more like anxiety than paranoia or OCD. Although OCD probably has a strong anxiety component.

The difference between OCD and paranoia is that in OCD (or other anxiety disorders) reality testing is intact, whereas for paranoia (or other psychoses) it is not. So the person with OCD might worry that other people might be watching him or her, but know that such worries are irrational, because he or she knows no one around has a criminal history and there is no one who is actually stalking him or her. The person with a paranoid psychosis would worry about being watched, but would believe that the government is part of a conspiracy to spy on him or her, without having any evidence that this is the case. The person with OCD is able to realize that such thoughts are irrational; the person with paranoia actually believes that such thoughts are an accurate picture of reality. I hope this makes sense.

What you wrote sounds more like anxiety--but I cannot diagnose you. It would be wise to seek a professional evaluation. Anxiety is treatable with a variety of medications, and psychosis is also treatable. In fact, the treatment success rate for people with psychotic disorders is quite high. I hope this helps.

I'll have to beg to differ. Thsi sounds like OCD, without a doubt. In the book, BRAINLOCK, Swartsz (spelling?) mentions something about a women with OCD holding a jug in front of hear and still feeling it might be on.

OCD it is, and strong OCD medicine you need (ie Anafranil high dose for 12+ weeks)

Ace.

Thanx everybody for the replies! Its more clear now. I used to get bad physical anxiety at night (when I wrote the post) Now that the physical stuff has worn off, it has obviously taken another form, OCD thoughts, less physical anxiety!
