Hi,
I've taken both. My pdoc would usually prescribe klonopin, but if I don't have it I would take diazapam. I think they are both moderate to long acting benzodiazapines. I think diazapam has a metabolite that klonopin doesn't. I like ativan because it is faster acting and I can feel the effects more.

I don't know, I seem to be doing a little better not taking too much. Right now, I'm taking a low dose of Abilify and 4mg of Ativan. I think I was taking too much Ativan before.

Wasn't there something about lamictal and topamax and something else that we talked about helped weird/clouded thinking? I mentioned the drugs to my pdoc, but he just said they were old antidepressants or something to that effect.

As far as I know, Klonopin is a benzodiazepam used as a anti-convulsant and anti-panic drug. Valium is much the same but is only classed as a sedative. I really think the main difference is dose equivalencies. I could be wrong.

Dear Male 34 & Ace,Klonopin (clonazepam) & Valium (diazepam) are both in the benzodiazepine class of drugs, which all are types of central nervous system depressants. Klonopin has a longer half-life, stays in your system longer, and provides more continuous relief, where something like Xanax (alprozolam) can be taken for a quicker response to more immediate symptoms, such as panic attacks. They are all older meds (pre-SSRI-class of drugs, like Prozac), and their effectiveness has been studied for years. The warnings (such as the one below) are often overstated, and doctors are sometimes leery of prescribing them. I've known people on Valium for years, though. Only thing is, I've read that the liver doesn't metabolize it as thoroughly (Mitch, or anyone? please verify?), and thus could be worse for your body overall. But you'd need to check that with somebody who knows more than I do about it...
Quick round-up from the NIMH site (but there's a wealth of information about them on the internet, search on google.com):

DescriptionBenzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZ-e-peens) belong to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system).
Some benzodiazepines are used to relieve anxiety. However, benzodiazepines should not be used to relieve nervousness or tension caused by the stress of everyday life.
Some benzodiazepines are used to treat insomnia (trouble in sleeping). However, if used regularly (for example, every day) for insomnia, they usually are not effective for more than a few weeks.
Many of the benzodiazepines are used in the treatment of other conditions, also. Diazepam is used to help relax muscles or relieve muscle spasm. Diazepam injection is used before some medical procedures to relieve anxiety and to reduce memory of the procedure. Chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, diazepam, and oxazepam are used to treat the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Alprazolam and clonazepam are used in the treatment of panic disorder. Clobazam, clonazepam, clorazepate, diazepam, and lorazepam are used in the treatment of certain convulsive (seizure) disorders, such as epilepsy. The benzodiazepines may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
