Last night I took Pericatin at 9.55pm due to anorgasmia. Well, I got erection many times & though I was 'near' many times.
But this is the prob: when I finally wnet to bed, in addition to suffering insomnia, my OCD became INTENSE and phobic anxiety and derealization WERE TERRIBLE. (worse than my pre-Nardil days -- Nardil has cured, or somewhat, the above) Thsi was no dought due to Periactin. You see...Periactin reduces serotonin whilst MAOIs and SSRIs cause greater levls of serotonin. This makes me sure that serotonin is a big prob with my illness.
Last night was pure hell. DO NOT USE PERIACTIN!I chucked mine away. I took 30mg of Valium to finally knock me out. I feel good today except for jitterness from the Val.
MAOIs and SSRIs are serotonin agonist, Periactin is the opposite - Seotonin antagonist. In the literature people are warned that Periactin can cause depression. All the literature even states that Periactin can cause depression and work against the AD's you are taking.
I REPEAT, DO NOT TAKE IT!

Is periactin known by any other names?

The answer to your question fairnymph is that periactin is also known as cyproheptadine hydrochloride. It is an antihistamine drug which should be used with caution by those using maoi medication.
If possible, reliable advice re drug interactions should be sought before taking anything with an maoi. Even more so if the maoi is not the only medication being taken regularly.
Recently there was a thread re grapefruit juice and its efect on meds, so just thought it might be useful to say that grapefruit juice and the antihistamine 'Terfenadine' or 'Triludan' should not be taken together. The grapefruit juice may inhibit metabolism of the terfenadine.
