Effexor XR and female orgasm problems

Posted by TMoore on February 22, 2003, at 2:29:24

I was on effexor xr a while back and had trouble achieving orgasm. I did not associate the two at first. For whatever reason, I went off of it for a number of months and could finally achieve orgasm rather easily. I found I needed to go back onto effexor xr and once again, being 2 weeks onto it I am having trouble achieving orgasm. I can feel it kind of wanting to get there but then it fades away and I'm left frustrated. Is this what I can expect from effexor xr even after I get regulated 6-8 weeks down the road? What can I expect and what options are available if this is the norm??? "T"

In my experience, Effexor had a pronouced anorgasmic effect on me too. Wellbutrin is supposed to have the fewest sexual side effects of the SSRIs, so you may want to ask your doc about switching to it or adding it to the Effexor to counteract the problems. I found wellbutrin made me too anxious, so I'm now on ReQuip, which is also supposed to help the sex. BTW, I'm not on Effexor anymore - am on Lexapro but the sex effect is the same.

Good luck - Stellaz

I had the same problem for the first few weeks I was on Effexor XR (75 mg/day). When I first figured out what was going on, I was pretty annoyed with the situation.

Rather than stress about it, which I knew would have only exacerbated the problem, I decided to "avoid the situation" temporarily in order to give my system time to adjust to the medication. A week or so later I tried again with no problems, and haven't had any since. Patience, I think, was the key for me.

I have been on Effexor twice for a few months each time, and I was NEVER able to orgasm on it no matter what! But, at least I still had a libido...
