AD's and sexual side-effects, again!

Posted by ricardo on February 23, 2003, at 4:57:12

I know there have been lots of posts on this subject, but here I am once again. After trying Paxil (erections but no orgasms), Wellbutrin (no sexual side-effects but a big relapse of my depression) and Tofranil (total impotence - and YES, I got back to normal about one week after discontinuing it), I decided to stop taking medication for my depression. My therapist, however, mentioned the fact that my experience with AD's ended up not being a complete one, since I never allowed enough time for these meds to really become effective. Now, my question is, do you guys have any success stories related to taking AD's, them being effective and causing no, or at least few and tolerable, sexual side-effects? I'd really love to get suggestions on suggestions I could make next time I visit a doc, should I ever decide to go back on medication... Again, many thanks,
Ricardo

Remeron is not supposed to cuase sexual problems, but I don't personally recomend it. What you can do Is try a small dose of a med - 10 mg of Paxil, celexa etc, to get some AD benefit without sexual problems. then you can augment the AD responce with things like folate, b12, fish oil etc.

You might also consider trying St Johns wort. It may take a few weeks to kick in, but If you asked me where my best sexual performance was, I'd say on SJW - It's really worth a try. Ask others too.
If you can bear the thought of being off Ads, SJW might just be strong enough. Indicated up to moderate depression.

I've tried SJW before, but never continuously... I do like your suggestion! Thanks, Ric

I know what you mean. I was on 40mg Prozac and I had no desire what so ever and nothing would happen when I did! My doctor lowered my dose to 20mg only in the morning. He also tryed adding Wellbutrin but it gave me horrible anxiety so I stopped after 2 days. I added Gingko Biloba 60mg a day to the mix and have had great results. It also seems like it has helped with my memory too. It took about two weeks to kick in. I do seem a little more depressed than when I was taking 40mg. Doesn't it seem like if your feeling happy you can never be TOTALLY happy on meds. It sucks. Good luck.

Don't ask me whether this trade is fair or unfair. But in order to keep a sense of well being one will have to lose something, and to keep going with an antidepressant, regardless of their age and class, surrender your normal sexuality. Does it seem fair enough ?
Depression will heal naturally and it is the initial stage that is most disturbing. Here is where you need an antidepressant, or something similar to that. Once you get the momentum back try to avoid chemical dependence or at least antidepressant dependence and try some other route to cope. So far it is the only way out. And remember!! You should be sensible to assess the benefit versus risk ratio
Good luck and take care

Buspar and Ginko have both worked for me to decrease sexuals side effects of AD's. Im hoping that 5 or 10 mgs of Lexapro alone will do the trick (help my mood without side effects). So far I feel less anxious and my insomnia has (finally) decreased. i think its still to soon to tell though about sexual side effects...
