My daughter has been on abilify now for just over a month. She is now on 15mg. I have noticed that her appetite is slowly increasing but not significantly.
She is sleeping better than she was when she first started taking it. Her system is getting use to it.
I am concerned however, because she at times talks rapidly to herself as well as get agitated. When this occurs I give her xanax and it does help.
My question is aren't there any other meds that can be given instead of the xanax. The xanax she takes it .025mg. Her psdoc instructed to give it to her at bedtime and during the day as needed. Yesterday I had to give it to her twice in the day. I did not give it to her at bedtime.
This morning she woke in really good spirits, which I am grateful for, with schizophenia one never knows how the person may be.
Just wondering if anyone could share their experiences on it.

If her agitation is do to akathisia (intense restlessness) sometimes inderal is used. Akathisia is sometimes difficult to distiguish from pyschosis at least from the outside. The person with akathisia has so much nervous energy and this can be mistaken for emergent psychosis.
You may want to look at this site. It is about the use of Abilify in children.

Thank you so much Thomas for the web site you listed. I in fact marked it. Very helpful.
My daughter is 30 years old and also mentally challenged Thomas so it is doubly difficult. She is mildly retarded so I am blest in the fact that she is considered high functioning.
Perhaps we are going to have to give the Abilify time to eradicate the agitation she is experiencing after reading the article.
She was on risperal (7mgs) before the Abilify. Although it did nothing for the schizophrenia, she wasn't agitated as she is now. Am wondering if a low dose of risperdal along with the abilify might help.
We see her psdoc in a month, if she is still experiencing this agitation, perhaps he well put her on something . I mean she is on xanax at bedtime (to help her sleep) and is only to take it during the day as needed. Problem is I don't want to have to give her more of this in the day because it is addictive and a a controlled substance. She is on a low dose of it .025mg.
Well we have to wait and see. Thanks again Thomas.
This is the end of the thread.
