Can Paxil cause hypertension

Posted by ZeeZee on February 18, 2003, at 18:09:31

Recently started on Paxil for panic disorder/agoraphobia. Started out on 5mgs for 2 weeeks and just passed the 2 wk mark for 10 mgs.
Have been experiencing a sense of rushing of adrenaline in my chest, (kind of hard to explain) and sleep disturbance since starting the 10 mgs. Was just sitting relaxed on the couch, watching TV, not anxious, kind of sleepy, but kept feeling this "rushing". Decided to take my blood pressure just to be sure 167/95!!!! and this is with the use of an Ace inhibitor twice a day.
Any feedback or advice?
Thanks

Yes Paxil can cause hypertension. I just did some research on Paxil, since I just started it yesterday. I guess hypertension is a "more common" side effect.

Hoped I helped a little. Maybe you should give your Dr. a call, especially since you are on an Ace inhibitor. Your blood pressure is high, but not an emergency. But you wouldn't want it to stay that high for too long. And keep checking it!!!

Thanks for the info. I've been staying away from the information on Paxil's side effects because I'm so suggestable. Normally I do all kinds of research but then I scare he hell out of myself. I had no idea that hypertension was a side effect!
I just took a Beta Blocker to help bring it down. Hopefully it will help until I speak with my doc.
Good Luck to you!

I thought I would let you know, the insert I received from the pharmacy also lists hypertension as a common side effect. My pdoc also gave me a paper on Paxil, which also listed it.

After posting to you, I read those papers to make sure the side effects were the same as most of the stuff I found on the internet. I wanted to make sure I didn't give you fasle info.

Hope your blood pressure goes down.

Thank you for the "luck", I need as much good luck as I can get right now. :-)

I tried Paxil last January and within a month is nearly killed me with hypertension, I was having night tremors or seizures.Thy had to immediatly take me off because I was having some major side effects that they said was very rare. So I would look into this with your doctor.

Thank you for the information and hope you are no doing well.
I had been taking it at bedtime along with .5mgs. of xanax. However, since I was awakening about 4-5 hours later my doc told me to skip my eve. dose and take it in the a.m. while still using the xanax at night. Yesterday was the first day that I had made this switch and was the first time I had noticed such strong surges in my chest and thus the hypertension (I had noticed some slight increase in my b/p before, but have been anxious about taking the Paxil and believe it was my anxiety). I stayed home from work today and slept in and had a perfect blood pressure reading this a.m. prior to taking it. I wonder if it might be the switch from taking it at bedtime for 4 wks to skipping it and taking it in the am that's kind of thrown everything out of whack?
I'm going to hang in there a few more days and see if my body adjusts.
Thanks
