can you overdose on neurontin?

Posted by bpdzone2000 on February 8, 2003, at 21:34:36

Neurontin makes me very mellow and kinda dopey. So far it has calmed some of my anxiety. I take 900mg spread out thru the day. If I were to take more would that be too dangerous? It works real well so far and I was wondering if I feel the need to take more could I? I know I will consult me pdoc but I was wondering if anyone is on a higher dose?

As far as I know the body can only use 600mg pill at any one time any more would be flushed down the pan-literally.
So 600mg four times a day I believe is the max the body can use.
Nope you cannot overdose.

Hi.

It is virtually impossible to overdose on Neurontin. Some people take as much as 4800mg or more. I have no idea what sorts of things a doctor considers when making a judgment to raise the dosage that high.

I take 1200 mg/day in three doses. I don't feel anything from it now, although it did make me really mellow at the very beginning. I have accidentally taken two 400 mg pills close together on a couple of occasions, and didn't notice any difference.

I've seen the same 600 mg rule of thumb that Dreamerz mentioned, although I don't have a reference handy. Basically, there's a limit to the amount that can be absorbed in a given length of time (the receptors for uptake saturate) and anything extra is lost in the urine. As I recall, for most people it's about 600 mg per 4 hours, although as mentioned by SLS, some people take up to 4800 mg/day.

So, overdose seems pretty hard (impossible?) to achieve, from what I understand. Also, this med bypasses the liver, which reduces the chances for interaction with most other meds greatly.

I take 600 mg. in the morning and 900mg. @ night. Luckily, my insurance pays the majority. The most that I have to pay is $45.

I mentioned this a while back, but Neurontin (gabapentin) is generic in Canada (and should soon be in the U.S. too). You can legally buy Neurontin and many other meds online quite inexpensively from Canadian pharmacies, with a prescription from a U.S. doctor. It might be worth investigating if there are cost issues such as lack of insurance etc.

My doc says he has heard that the body can't use more than 600mg but he doesn't believe it.
He agrees, though, that there isn't much danger of overdosing.

I read in the WSJ that pharm companies are going to stop selling meds to companies in Canada that do this. KILLJOYS! UGH!

This is a very interesting comment.
I find that once you get to a certain dosage you get used to it. So what I do sometimes is take less, then when I reup the dosage, I can feel the affect. The thing is though that even if you dont feel some affect, if you feel ok, they you are ok!
I will say though that I started with what my Dr recommended and then experimented from there. Sometimes I need more, sometimes I need less. Im going for less now except when I get really stressed and then I take more. Then when Im less stressed I take less again.

Same thing I do..seems sometimes the brain needs a kick for the drug to work again..happens with Effexor although I don't increase the dose just take less for a few days then return to normal dose.Don't know why this is the case.

I think that the pharm co's backed off on the issue of not selling to Canadian pharmacies -- too much bad PR. I don't have the information handy, but this should be easy to check.

P.S. --- As a Canadian living in the U.S., I think that Canada has the sanest health care system around (but of course I'm biased...).
