I took my first dose of Adderall XR this morning. I was just recently diagnosed with ADD. I tried Strattera, but had an allergic reaction.
My pdoc said it may make me feel a little on edge and speedy for a few days until I get used to it. Yep...I'm high as a kite. I feel like I'm on Cocaine XR (ok, I know there is no such thing, but still...).
So is this normal? I have had a lot of motivation today. I did things that I've been putting off. I can actually sit down, and focus on one thing at a time. But, I've almost been too hyper & talkative, and feeling really good!!! I have also been in this strange confession sort of mood. It's like I want to tell everyone everything that I have kept a secret. Is this stuff some kind of truth serum??:-)
I have also had pretty much no appetite. I tend to crave things and I had no cravings today...odd for me.My situation is a little weird. I was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder over a year and a half ago, now I am being diagnosed as having ADD, I personally think I have both. I also have a history of seizures, and still have problems on occassion. I take Klonopin for that, also for aggitation, and some anxiety. I just hope Adderall doesn't cause a big problem with seizures. I've read that you shouldn't take a stimulant if you've had a history of seizures, but what if you need one???
Anyway....just wondering if others have or have had the same speedy effect when first starting Adderall, and how long does it take to go away. Honestly, I am so unmotivated, that I really don't mind that side effect, but others might!!!
Any advice/suggestions or anything will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Jodie

The overdrive you describe is somewhat normal for someone who's never taken a stim. But perhaps you might want to consider taking half as much as you did today. And this feeling seems to persist, talk to your doc about it, since there's some concern over bipolar; as a stim might trigger a reaction.
But by and large, I think most people can have a lightbulb experience on their first stim try; over time, this fades.
I personally do not like Adderall any more, especially the XR. After a couple of years, Adderall made me depressed and somewhat shakey. There's anotehr thread here discussing the difference in mood effects of the two stims.
Also, just FYI: Dexadrine is a LOT kinder on my skin. I have skin reactions to almost all meds, including asperin. So if you find that Adderall causes you any skin probs, dex is likely tol be a good alternate option.

I appreciate the advice. I will let my pdoc know if this continues.
My son was put on Dex. when he was first diagnosed with ADHD. It worked for a while, but he started getting really moody, and aggressive, I definitely don't need anymore of those feelings!!! I don't necessarily get aggressive, but severely aggitated, and have little patience. My son went on Adderall after the Dex., he lost too much weight, and started getting the same type of moodiness as Dex. gave him. He's on Ritalin now, it's working well for him. But I know they all work different on everyone!!
What kind of skin problems on Adderall? Allergic reaction (rash), or acne, dry skin? I do tend to get rashes from meds easily. Codeine has given me a severe rash before.
Thanks again!!!
Jodie

Now that the Adderall is wearing off, I'm getting a headache, is that normal?

Yes, this is normal.
The problem with amphetamines is that you grow a tolerance. I was on them all (for depression and amotivational syndrome brough on by SSRIs), even meth-amphetamine. I dropped them all because of the mood-swings and aggrivating my social anxiety.
I hate to rain on your parade but don't expect this feeling to last.
This is the end of the thread.
