I am 35 and my Doc suddenly wants to wean me off the stimulant (that has been working for a few years) and start me on a "new drug", which I think he referred to as *Seralin*. I've been looking for it on the net, but so far only found Sertraline and Serzone. What is this drug???

You might be thinking of Selegiline. There is a thread above started by Lynn on 10/24/99. It's being looked at for ADD.

I don't have a clue what this med would be, but let us know once you figure it out. I am also dxed w/ adhd and take adderall and am interested in any nonstimulant treatment for one of my daughters.

I have been on ritalin for two years, it's worked quite fine also, my doctor too is pushing the new drug...i don't want to switch. the new drug he wants me on is called Metadate, i haven't heard of yours. I'm guessing from research I've done online, somewhere, there are financial incentives for the doctors, let me know if you find anything else out.

The new metadate comes in extended release tablets preventing dosing twice, it's supposed to last for 8 hrs versus the typical four with Ritalin, however, Ritalin itself comes in extended release tablets but that has not been proven effective. Time will only tell about this one. Personally, I prefer Ritalin, it's always worked just fine.

Metadate is just the generic equivilant of Ritalin SR. (methylphenidate in time release)

RitalinSR's half life contrary to the name has been shown to be not much longer than regular Ritalin, so Metadate is actually Ritalin with a different SR chemical which allows for a much longer half life.

So, it is another brand of methylphenidate SR, but not exactly the same as Ritalin SR or its generic equivalents, because of the better extended release feature?
As for the generics, I believe I have taken at lease two different generic versions of methylphenidate SR. They seem to last about 6-7 hours, as opposed to about 3 for regular ritalin or generic, at least for me.

I know, I have been on a lot of stuff, but actually there is plenty I haven't been on: most TCAs (took one initial dose of elavil a long time ago with bad results), any MAOIs, haven't tried celexa or zoloft or remeron, never tried any benzos, antipsychotics, or anticonvulsants, and haven't tried adderall or dexadrine, nevermind the other stuff like naltrexone or reboxetine, and haven't delved into the nonscripts like sam-e or SJW, or other supplements.
A lot of us here have had to try a lot of things before settling on a formula that works sufficiently and is tolerable.

Has anyone one tried Provigil? It is used to treat narcolepsy,but they are testing it for ADD.

My doc gave me Serdeps, and the pharmacist said it is the exact same thing with Lustral and Seralin. I am on Seralin right now.

I am only guessing, but am wondering if doc ment to say Sarafem (fluoxetine) that is the new marketed name for prozac --with target advertising at women--b/c "prozaz" is now sold as a generic. What's sad is mant docs seem to almost think/sell it as a new drug. Hope this helps a bit.

I believe the drug you are referring to is Strattera. Its not a stimulant, but rather works by increasing the norepinepherine levels. I tried one 30mg dose and it made me very anxious. I'm going to continue with it and see if the anxiety dissipates. Certainly worth a try. Good luck and let us here how you make out should you decide to try it.
