Bipolar on Effexor/Zyprexa, Addicted to Ultram

Posted by Jet Meck on February 2, 2003, at 17:19:21

I have recently accepted the fact that I am biploar. The Effexor and Zyprexa have helped me greatly. But I am addicted to Ultram. I do not have a prescription for it. I buy it via the internet at a Mexican Pharmacy. I will take up to 20 50mg Ultram in one day. Then when I run out the withdrawals are horrendous for me. I feel as though I have severe flu symptoms. Then I will use vacation time from work to recover (what a waste of vacation). After a week or two after feeling better I am ready to do it again. It is very expensive too but that does not stop me. I do not see a pdoc and receive my Effexor and Zyprexa through my gdoc. I have been through drug treatment 4 times in my life. Why do I still feel a need to take something like Ultram, and abuse it severely. HELP!!!

Before I started SSRI's I took Ultram for a shoulder injury and found it very addicting with awful withdrawls after just a few days use. I have been on SSRI's(Celexa, Lexapro) for a few years now and used Ultram 3-4 times. I don't get the high from it at all nor the withdrawl. I'm not sure why this is, but they may activate similar areas in the brain (anyone have any ideas?). SSRI's may not be an option for you with your dx.

I agree with you Dog Breath I have noticed while on Effexor 150mg XR and Zyprexa 5mg the Ultrma does not affect as they had before. I have to take so much more of the Ultram. Let me tell you though if you take 20 Ultram a day for 3 or 4 days straight. You feel the withdrawals after stopping. I had to take two days vacation from work to recover from the Ultram abuse (What a waste of good vacation) These 2 days were on top of a weekend too, and I needed that time also. Anyway just my 2 cents

Can you not take that anti-narcotic (or something like that..) drug called 'Naltrexone'?
