Posted by Maskiel on January 31, 2003, at 15:07:32

I am taking 5 milligrams of zyprexa and am going to stop taking it in about another week. I started taking abilify last week and am making a change in meds. My Question Is??? Is there anyone who who has stopped taking zyprexa and had any side effect from stopping. THANKS and please reply.

Anxiety. I made a switch from Zyprexa to Abilify, I got anxiety, just like when I stoped the Zyprexa with out a replacement. I'm back on the Zyprexa till I can find a better replacement, hopfuly something that can cure anxiety, any suggestions. A long time ago I was in psycosis but my doctor thinks it has passed, I wonder why he doesn't give me a plain old anxiety med that won't cause weight gain?

If you really want the answer, it's not withdrawl. Even they might convince themselves that. But in reality, docs prefer to give out complex therapies that include antipsychotics to make them feel more experienced and creative as the elite psychopharmacologists they all dreamt they might become in med school.

I mean, think about it. They need to justify their existence to themselves and (they think) the rest of society. How would they go about doing this if they prescribed something your GP would be comfortable scribbling down?

They instead need to give out drugs like APs that sound scary to non-psyciatrists, and also create side effects requiring them to add yet more complicated drugs to your cocktail. When I was 18, my p-doc said he could add Viagra to the mix after I complained of sexual side-effects. What other field of medicine even has the audacity to think of prescribing an 18 year old Viagra? I haven't even had sex yet, damn it! I have to go on Viagra BEFORE having sex EVER in my life? What's wrong with these people?

Ah, sigh. I think venting on this board is the only thing that's kept me sane from my p-doc's patheticness...

That was an awfully well writen post here.I liked the "zippy" ending/ Remember there are those of us with Schizophrenia that do thrive on the atypical anti-psychotics. My paranoia isnt every day without drugs, but IT can just swell up suddenly,,it does affect my vision BIGTIME<<>> Plus Mom had it (which explains just about everything)... She was so cool. Good luck on your treatments and exercise

I had to taper off of zyprexa when I was on for a prolonged period. I think (?) chemically it's similar to benzos and that may be why I had anxiety and some panic when I stopped. Those symptoms ended in about a week. best of luck-judy

I am in the process of weaning off 2.5mg of Zyprexa. I am taking 1.25mg right now. The first week I reduced, I experienced headache, nausea, and anxiety. The headache and nausea went away after about 1 week; however, I still have some anxiety after 3 weeks.

I tapered down to 1.25mg over a few weeks, stuff to 1.25mg for 2 weeks and then stopped.. the only withdrawal side effect I had was insomnia.. unfortunatly the insomnia didn;t easy up over a period of three months.

I went back on Zyprexa a month ago and have sletp really well since! (insomnia wasn't the reason I went back on it, but the return of suicidal ideation)
