Diagnosed as Bipolar

Posted by linkadge on January 20, 2003, at 12:51:00

For those of you who know me,
I have been having some problems
the last little while.

The doctor says I am bipolar and
is putting me on lithium.

Is there a life after this diagnosis.

I gues the me as I know him will cease
to exist.

I'll be back when I can.

I don't know if it is any consolation, but
the first psych I saw told me that if he had to
choose a mental illness that would be the one
he pick.

Mitch,

Did he give you a reason why he would chose bipolar disorder?

Thanks.

You're still exactly the same you you were ten seconds before the diagnosis, and ten hours before the diagnosis. It might give you insight into some of your behaviors and feelings. And it might help your doctor find the correct medication for you. But other than that, the diagnosis is just a word. You are still you, uniquely Linkadge, not a diagnosis, not a simple label. They haven't come up with a diagnosis yet that can sum up Linkadge or Dinah or anyone else. You're way too complex for that.

No, he didn't, but I assumed it had to do with increased periods of creativity. He used to sing Gregorian chants in Latin at times-so I wondered if he was taking lithium too!

Hi!! I was diagnosed about a year and a half ago as having bipolar disorder. I was a little relieved, and a little scared. I was relieved because I knew something was wrong with me, but scared because it meant something was really wrong with me!!! I am now being told by another pdoc that I have ADD, not bipolar.
Cheer up, there are meds out there to control mood swings. You are still the same you! Be happy that you have a diagnosis, now it can be treated. I always just wanted to be normal, and not have a label. But what is normal anyway? There isn't a normal, I'm finally realizing this. Good luck, keep us posted!!

Just to let you know, there is life after being diagnosed as being bipolar!!!! Hang tight, it'll only get better now that you have treatment options you did not before. ~Tony

I had been taking Celexa for almost two years.
I caused euphoria yes but never extreme.
I started to become very agitated after taking the celexa. I became paranoid, elated, and sleep less and less. My mind started racing, and colors became extremely intence - all was like gingerbread houses.

I am now taking 900 mg Lithium and Celexa. I am feeling better which is a relief. I am going to see about lamictal.

It sounds as if you have a similar reaction to ADs as I do- except in my case I get full blown mania. Have you considered tapering off the celexa and seeing if you have ANY symptoms? You may luck out and have med-induced bipolar disorder and not need any meds. best of luck- judy
