Question about pdoc abbreviation

Posted by viridis on January 10, 2003, at 19:37:48

I should know this by now but...

When people use the abbreviation "pdoc" here, I've always thought it referred to "psychiatrist" or "psychopharmacologist" (i.e., a mental health specialist who can prescribe medications). That's how I've used it.

Recently I saw someone here define "pdoc" as "primary doctor", meaning (presumably) a general practitioner (GP).

So, is one use right and one wrong? Is "pdoc" an "official" abbreviation, at least for this site?

I thought I had these abbreviations and acronyms sorted out, but apparently not.

Thanks in advance!

I use it to refer to my psychopharmocologist. I was under the impression that it is slang and not any kind of "official" abbreviation. I learned it here on PB.

Any kind of "psych"-doc is a pdoc.
Mostly psychiatrists, psychopharmacologists, etc.
To me, I've always assumed they had to be MDs, but somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
In other words, they can write you a scrip for your psych-problems.
