First Post - Nardil vs Parnate Experience

Posted by Never_Mind on January 11, 2003, at 2:33:34

First off I have read through the past 2-3 months of posts and am impressed by the demeanor and helpfullness of everyone on this board.

On to the questions...

I am a Nardil lover! The effect is amazing, and even though it is 4 pills a day (and no chocolate...) there is no comparison between when I am taking the drug and when I am not. Having tried most all of the SSRIs on the market at various dosages with no effect I finally turned to a Psychiatrist specializing in social anxiety.

He suggested Nardil. Two weeks in and I was energetic, three weeks and I felt like I was 18 again. I know many of you have been in this position before, but you can't put a price on being able to just go out to dinner with your family without feeling like you are going to vomit at any moment.

Well, then came the Nardil shortage. After discussing the situation with my doctor (he said that he could get maybe another month's supply for me at the beginning of December and I had drained all of the local pharmacies, with no estimation of when I would be able to get it again) I decided that it would be best to switch to parnate after a short washout period.

Coming down off Nardil was terrible to say the least if just for the nightmares alone. I also experienced a great deal of dizziness when either sitting or standing. SO I was very excited when I was able to start the Parnate.

That didn't last long though... I am a month into Parnate and it is nothing like Nardil. I sleep constantly, but never for more than 3-4 hours at a time. THe drowsiness is immediate and there is no fighting it. I also sweat profusely when I am sleeping, but I have stopped having nightmares. My wife has said that my breathing when I am sleeping has become very shallow - quick, short breaths and I tend to "run" in my sleep. I also feel very "stressed" something that would never happen on Nardil. As a matter of fact, I could not name a single bad side-effect of Nardil in the 3 years that I was taking it.

So there is the story. Does anyone have any new information on when I can expect to see Nardil back at the pharmacy? I have an appointment with my doc in a couple of days, is he going to agree with me about getting off of this Parnate nightmare? Has anyone else experienced such a difference in Parnate vs. Nardil?

Thanks in advance for your comments.

You can have your pharmacist call Pfizer directly and request a "drop shipment". They say that they will send one month's supply within 48 hours. The number for your pharmacist to call is:

1-800-533-4535

They will not accept calls from consumers at this number. It is meant for doctors and pharmacists.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
Scott

I had the opposite response. I loved both but experienced too many side effects on the Nardil and few if any on the Parnate. I had increased energy and libido and decreased appetite with subsequent weight loss, on the Parnate.
Hope you're able to get your Nardil again, I'm all for sticking with what works.
Good Luck
