An apology

Posted by ArthurGibson on November 28, 2002, at 7:23:17

Two or three months ago, as PROZAC took hold on my depression and it started to lift, I was somewhat rude to two or three of the contributors to this board. I cannot remember who, but I think that one was "Bearded Lady"

I have now stopped taking the PROZAC and feel miles better. However looking back, I realise that I must have been suffering from a form of "mania" caused by the PROZAC altering some chemical balance or whatever.

Therefore I would ask those who I may have offended to please accept my apology for my rudeness. It was not excusable, but it was a part of my illness and the effect of an otherwise great drug. I am sorry.

It takes a lot of guts to admit you were wrong publicly. I congratulate you on your frank admission that you were wrong. I could tell you were manic, most likely from the prozac. That is pretty common, where individuals with bipolar tendencies are placed on SSRIs such as Prozac and left to their own devices. It all goes back to the lack of diagnosing sophistication of clinical psychiatry. Its not your fault you probably should have been placed on a mood stabilizer or combination Mood stabilizer/antidepressant rather than just prozac by itself. Blame psychiatry and its poor technological capabilities instead.

Apology accepted. Just keep in mind that this board tilts more towards the biological psychiatry side of the spectrum and I think you will be fine here.

It took a lot of courage to post that, Arthur.

It does happen from time to time, as I'm sure we all understand.

I'm glad things are going better for you. I'm sure it wasn't pleasant for you.

I don't even know Arthur Gibson, but I like people with guts. Not everyone admits it, but nearly all of us get out of line now and then, and the truly generous people admit such while overlooking others' failure to do so. Almost invariably the other(s) involved had a hand in whatever unpleasantness went down. I'm not commenting on any past altercations. I was nowhere near and had no idea, and don't want to know. I'm just drawing on experience from other boards and other days.

Has anyone ever known one of those people loathe to admit ever being wrong and loathe to ever apologize? They are the worst to be around.

I don't remember the incident but your apology says a lot good about you. It's pretty hard for people with no mental health problems to understand that when something like this happens, it's not the "real" person speaking in anger or hate but something that takes over our mind & personality.

I remember reading about a man (a century or so ago) who after a horrible accident that affected his brain, had a permanent personality change. Before, he was clean, friendly, good-natured & well-liked. Afterwards, he swore (when swearing wasn't the norm), was lazy, dirty, & considered an over-all unlikable guy. I felt awful when I read that. To be changed permanently into someone you really aren't...

I'm glad for you that you're back to normal. I hope things continue well for you.

That man was Phinneas(sp?) Cage.

That's him - thanks! I forgot his name... (nm) » McPac
