Hello,

Has anyone here had difficulty coming off stimulants?

No, but then I've never let my tolerance build up & I do take only as little as possible that will benefit me. If you look at people who are addicted to meth or any other strong stimulant, it's one of the nastiest addictions to break. But if you're not planning on misusing stimulants & will use them judiciously, I wouldn't worry overly.

Hi Denise

I don't know exactly what stimulants you are on but I can only say that I have a caffeine addiction. I have tried many time to quit caffeine but have not been able to succeed. I used to have an addiction to alcohol and I can tell you that quitting alcohol was easy in comparison to trying to quit caffeine.

If you take a stimulant that is more powerful than caffeine, I am not surprised that you are having difficulty coming off it. It's relatively easy to reduce the amount you take but the brain just doesn't want to let go of that last little bit and the urge to get the hit that stimulants provide is very powerful indeed.

good luck

I've been taking Adderall, an amphetamine mix, for almost a year, at a pretty low dose (5-10 mg/day). I take it most days, but every now and then I'll skip a day or two. I haven't noticed any withdrawal, and I'm quite sure I could stop taking it if necessary. I don't have any plans to discontinue it, though, since it's very effective for concentration and also has a powerful antidepressant effect for me.

I've used every stim on the market, including Desoxyn, without noticing either withdrawl, addiction, or tolerance. Responsible use of any stimulant includes using it only when necessary and avoiding it when it's not. Take the lowest dose that achieves the desired effect. Unless you do important things on the weekend, let your liver have some rest then. And avoid using it to replace rest. It's funny the package says that, but people honestly believed it was perfectly okay to get tolerated to 300mg/day-500mg/day of amphetamines, not sleep for days at a time as a routine, and only eat when force-feeding one's self. Awe, the 60's. Why wasn't I born then??? I wish I could be that naive.

"I survived the 60s" (nothing to be proud of I can assure you), take a good look at Ozzie Osborn. "Crank" was my wonder drug.....how I admire you folks that can use it properly.

Geezer.

Are you by any chance a bass player? :)

I've wanted to ask this question previously but with your Ozzy comment I couldn't hold back any longer :)

Hi Bluedog,

Nope, can't play a note.....how about you-are you in the business? I am just a burned out old "speed-freak" with TRD - not made a bit better by my past attempts at "better living through chemistry".

Nope, I'm not in the business but I have been known to act as "roadie" for my brother who played in a few local bands (LOL).

His band achieved a modicum of success and a record they produced was actually voted as the top cd of 2001 by a US internet site ahead of established bands like Faith No More (believe it or not)

I also happen to be a pretty big Black Sabbath fan :).

Are you off all stimulants now? How seriously do you believe your chemical experiments contributed to your current condition?

regards
bluedog

> Hi bluedog,

Sometimes the timing gets scary. Just as I read your post I was listening to "Travelin' Band" by CCR and John Fogerty is screaming "747 comin' outta da sky....". Actually, I did grow up and lead a productive life after the 60s but still go back to "drugs-sex-n'-rockn'-roll" and "if it feels good do it" (only in my head these days, would never survive the real thing). My congratulations to you and your brother....truly an accomplishment in todays market. Please give me the title of the recording so I can buy it.

Yes, completely off pstims these days. Took a very hard fall in 1985 - got up to 200mg/day for 6 months, lost enough weight to look like one of those poor soles from the holocaust. A "kindly" old pdoc (who taught hard lessons) put me in a psyc. unit for 6 weeks and took me off "cold turkey".....I don't think there is anything quite like amphetamine psychosis! When you end up about 2 days "premortem" you learn the lesson. I really can't say how much effect this had on my current TRD, I had Major Unipolar Depression long before the "speed" experience and the lethargy and fatigue have always been a major part of it. I just keep looking for answers like everyone else here at pbabble. I am very impressed with the knowledge that the young people have here and feel privileged to be part of it.

I wish you the very best,

Geezer
